Preservation effort for current XUL Thunderbird extensions?

Unread post by mr tribute » 2019-05-08, 17:52

I assume there will "always" be a mail client based on UXP. Thunderbird 68 slated for release sometime later this year seems to come with less add-on compatibility. Is there an effort to save TB extensions similar to what has been done with Firefox extensions?

I realize those TB extensions might need work before being compatible with for example Interlink. Anyway, it would be a shame to lose them because modifying an extension is probably a whole lot easier than starting from scratch for a potential add-on developer.

It's sad to see Thunderbird going the same way as Firefox although they try to keep some add-on compatibility (less and less).

PS If some of those extensions are WebExtensions, please excuse me.

Port them to Interlink.

Port them to Interlink.
This is a long-term goal. Short term, I think it would be beneficial to archive as many as possible so that we can continue work on porting them or referencing them even if they are wiped from the TB add-ons site.

Think JustOff could be persuaded to do this in a minor fork of CAA or expand CAA to TB/SM?

It seems that even the dictionaries might disappear. These could be even harder to locate later - I've already backed up the ones I need.

edit: perhaps though they'd be easier to fork/extract/convert? Don't know.

We have forked all the dictionaries.. Also, they are generic to any application. I just haven't put them on the Add-ons Site yet. So that is irrelevant to this thread.

Requires adding support for the add-on type, writing an import system to initially get them into the database, and deciding what to do about updating them.. Expect this in Phoebus 2.1.

See Issue #58 (ca-archive).
