On one hand, I'm somewhat skeptical that Google would risk a lot of users permanently abandoning their browser over crippling UBO and other adblockers with this API change. On the other hamd, perhaps that number of users is small enough (or the demand from advertisers large enough) that Google believes they can weather the backlash (which I imagine will be significant).

In any case, I'm interested to see where this goes, but I do think there is a nontrivial chance that UBO for Chrome will survive. Even if Google does make this change, I think there's an even greater chance that Mozilla will not. It would be too good to pass up in terms of advantages that they can tout over Chromium browsers.

Short term maybe, but if Google makes version 3 "the standard" then Mozilla will very likely follow if their WebExtensions "all eggs in one basket" decision means extension developers will have to make a choice and will likely choose the larger market share (Chrome+Edge) to target their WebExtensions at.

Mozilla already said they're going with that v3 stuff, so... UXP and other small independent developers will be all that's left. And despite the title, impact isn't limited to gorhill's extensions.
