Want to Upgrade SSD
Want to Upgrade SSD
Wanting to upgrade my SSD for quite some time. Although it uses SLC NAND (according to reading by Intel Toolbox software, it won't start to die anytime soon), it is limited by its small capacity of 120GB. So it's a big no-no for installing games like Nier Automata & Titanfall 2. Is it possible to determine a new SSD's potential reliability by looking at the overall specs in their respective datasheets?
Kingston HyperX Fury (non-RGB, 2014-2015 model) 480GB:
TBW: 750TB
MTBF: 1 millions hours
NAND: MLC
Warranty: 3 years
ADATA Ultimate SU900 512GB:
TBW: 400TB
MTBF: 2 millions hours
NAND: 3D MLC
Warranty: 5 years
ADATA Ultimate SU800 512GB:
TBW: 400TB
MTBF: 2 millions hours
NAND: 3D TLC
Warranty: 3 years
Crucial MX500 500GB:
TBW: 180TB
MTTF: 1.8 million hours
NAND: 3D TLC
Warranty: 5 years
Western Digital Blue 500GB:
TBW: 200TB
MTTF: 1.75 million hours
NAND: 3D TLC
Warranty: 5 years
Kingston looks to be the best choice for having the highest endurance numbers and utilizes MLC instead of TLC, but it is backed by a short warranty period and have a "life expectancy" of 1 millions hours. Does MTBF matter or should I just look at TBW?

I am using my second ADATA SSD and have zero complaints about them. They are
as fast as they are rated and I found out after I thought my first one had died
that it was simply not being recognized by the bios and that there are ways to
get it back. But I did not know that then and purchased another.

I purchased two others for friends.
After some looking, it appears that the xpg series SSD are no longer being made
in the normal 2.5 format and they are moving to the PCI express version instead.
I did find just a couple of them on Amazon but very few, and only one on all of Ebay..

Re: Want to Upgrade SSD
Much depends on the rest of your components as to how fast an SSD will feel in normal use. I'd opt for the Crucial, here's what it can deliver in the better machines, duking it out with the Samsungs on averaged speeds:
The top performing MX500's as System drives:

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/12768478
https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/12751588
https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/12716550
Might be an idea to run a baseline analysis/benchmark with that site's software to see what's performing well and not so well, paste the URL for your result, we'll look it over and see if there's a weak link that can be improved upon, though if it's a notebook, they're often constrained by BIOS options, or lack of.

Another vote for Crucial here. Been using a CT480BX2 as my system drive for quite a while now and it's rock solid.

Re: Want to Upgrade SSD
Due to concerns over unreliability, I decided to limit the tech. to MLC. I bought this SSD about 18 months ago after some research; decided that I liked Samsung's 3-D NAND due to the large cells and lack of potential cross-talk, so splurged a small fortune on a 512GB 850 Pro (stayed with SATA 3 in case W7 didn't want to play with NVMe).
I don't know how (un)reliable modern SSDs are. None, AFAIK, carries a 10-year warranty.

Re: Want to Upgrade SSD
I tried, but suddenly the monitor went blank and my PC whirred like crazy. Had to restart twice. Most likely the whirring sound came from my GPU's fans because the crash or whatever it was occurred in middle of the graphic benchmark. Can't tell if fault lies with Windows 10 or GPU or both.satrow wrote:Might be an idea to run a baseline analysis/benchmark with that site's software to see what's performing well and not so well, paste the URL for your result, we'll look it over and see if there's a weak link that can be improved upon, though if it's a notebook, they're often constrained by BIOS options, or lack of.

Re: Want to Upgrade SSD
I'd want to diagnose and then fix whatever caused that before laying out any cash to 'improve' something that's faulty. Dig into Reliability Monitor and see what details were reported: Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center\Reliability Monitor.hujan86 wrote:I tried, but suddenly the monitor went blank and my PC whirred like crazy. It might have been a TDR but they can be very tricky and time-consuming to pin down and fix.

Re: Want to Upgrade SSD
Just get the cheapest one, unless it has terrible reviews, it will be good enough and last a long time.
Re: Want to Upgrade SSD
Doesn't say anything else other than Windows had shut down improperly and that it was "unexpected". I did update the OS from the Anniversary Update to latest 1809 version, then update the GPU drivers. Same result. But nothing like this ever happened when I played Halo Online or other games (old titles from 2010-2014). So I dunno.satrow wrote:I'd want to diagnose and then fix whatever caused that before laying out any cash to 'improve' something that's faulty. Anyhow, my concern currently is to whether clone the system drive to the new SSD or make a clean install. Since originally it was Windows 7 installed, so the boot settings had been set to "Legacy+Uefi". That might be the reason why I can't boot from USB flash drive to update the BIOS.
