Freedom on the Net 2018 - The Rise of Digital Authoritarianism

Unread post by Tomaso » 2018-11-01, 23:03

Freedom on the Net 2018 - The Rise of Digital Authoritarianism:
https://freedomhouse.org/report/freedom ... tarianism/
The internet is growing less free around the world, and democracy itself is withering under its influence.

Disinformation and propaganda disseminated online have poisoned the public sphere.
The unbridled collection of personal data has broken down traditional notions of privacy.
And a cohort of countries is moving toward digital authoritarianism by embracing the Chinese model of extensive censorship and automated surveillance systems.
As a result of these trends, global internet freedom declined for the eighth consecutive year in 2018.

No offence, but it reads like a politically motivated and thus rather poor report in a "joint with George Bush Institute and Penn Biden Center". For the democratic global leaders in controlling the net it's easy to throw stones on those unliked states in the competition, who do it for very similar reasons like "National Security", of course in a more cruel way.

Quiz question: Where I live gov is using spying tools legally and illegally on demonstrations, cases of lawyers and journalists have been reported. These tools are sold to other countries, also dictatorships...

Do I live in a free country (y/n?)
Hint: Thanks God, Freedomhouse "status" says yes. :)

There's very little point in bringing up heavy political subjects on this forum. Please refrain from doing so. There are dedicated fora for such discussions better suited than this product forum; kindly post there if you want to have discussions about it.
