Just a "heads-up" to other people who may be experiencing the same issue:
MalwareBytes Anti-EXPLOIT 1.12.1.109 "BETA" is blocking PM 28 (on my 32-bit Win 8.1 system)...
Work-around: Deactivate the PM-application protection in MBAE

The problem appears to have been fixed with the release of PM 28.0.0.1
