Re: Microsoft is buying GitHub
I honestly don't mind this merger so much. Microsoft in 2018 and Github as a company are pretty well-aligned, and as far as takeovers go and clear statements made about the future, it could have been a lot worse with, for example, one of the other big software players acquiring GitHub.

If Microsoft is smart, they won't mess with it unnecessarily.
Time will tell I suppose.

I'm too old to believe in companies' promises, especially Microsoft's.
I'm sorry!

I hope they just keep it "open", in spirit.

Google's being doing that too, lately, though a little bit differently.dinosaur wrote:A well known Micro$oft strategy, I'm afraid...
After all, once you have substituted all your software with a Google/Microsoft/Apple service the "extinguish" part is complete.

Re: Microsoft is buying GitHub
Another "full of his unrealistic principles" Stallman article. Using a service is bad "if you could perform the same task on your own computer (even if no such software exists)". Really?vannilla wrote:An interesting read
Github is already a service comprising things you can't do on your own computer, anyway. Sure, you can do version control, but not the interaction with other collaborators part.
I also don't see why the three Es would apply here in relation to the merger. Github already embraced git as a vcs and extended it. But I don't see how this would extinguish git as a VCS.

Ehm, I remember the past when MS denigrated open source.
" Microsoft expects the acquisition will be accretive to operating income in fiscal year 2020 on a non-GAAP basis "
What will be the price for that ?

Of course, you could: just setup a git repo on your computer, make it available via Internet to others... and in a few years, sell it for several billion dollars to Micro$oft !Moonchild wrote:Github is already a service comprising things you can't do on your own computer, anyway. I mean, you could run GitLab on your own server, and collaborate with people, like how Stallman's article mentions doing stuff on a friend's server.
Re: Microsoft is buying GitHub
Off-topic:
IIRC both Google and Microsoft ran similar services some time ago. I do not think anyone complained back then. Why it is a problem now?

Could you please elaborate on why you think it's an abomination?Moonchild wrote:GitLab is an abomination.SpockFan02 wrote:I mean, you could run GitLab on your own server, and collaborate with people, like how Stallman's article mentions doing stuff on a friend's server.

Re: Microsoft is buying GitHub
I have used repositories for the various CMS extensions that I provide but only because that was required to be listed on the CMS parent sites. When I started working with PM source I needed a source control solution to conserve working vs updated files but because the project is huge I looked into hosting my own locally.yami_ wrote:you could run GitLab on your own server... On Windows 7 I am now using VisualSVN. If I wanted to make this available to other coders I could use VMware Workstation and/or TeamViewer.
