AV1 video codec released

Unread post by 137ben » 2018-03-28, 21:56

Today, the Alliance for Open Media announced the release of the AV1 video codec. AV1 is an open, royalty-free codec optimized for UHD video and intended to compete with MPEG's HEVC.

There is, of course, some irony in an organization whose members include Apple, Hulu, and Netflix claiming to bring "open" anything. According to AOMedia's mission statement, the organizations' members are the "companies behind the open web." They aim to bring you media the way they say it should be: closed and locked behind DRM.

Fortunately, it does seem that AV1 is expected to be used for some real open media. DRM-free AV1-encoded video is planned for Youtube, Facebook, and Twitch. It is also possible that AV1 will be adopted for DRM-free videos by other sites, including Gumroad, itch.io, Vimeo, Picarto, and the Internet Archive. An open standard like AV1 is still an improvement over paying outrageous licensing fees to MPEG.

And now we wait for the encoding software to be optimized and full hardware decoding support.

FYI Google has started testing AV1 for low resolution videos at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... NUQAVLwrZS.
