I guess it just means that they can continue with business-as-usual.
And you know, with cheap VPS offers out there, if ISP data collection and snooping is a concern, you can pay $5/month for a VPS and set up your own private non-logging proxy/VPN Probably less than what you'd pay a third party for the same, anyway

Where do you buy a VPS for $5?
I currently pay about $5 a month right now with VPN.AC. I pay every three months.

Re: It sucks to be American sometimes.....
Is $7 alright? Cause https://afterburst.com/unmetered-ssd-vps drive a lot of Pale Moon servers...
Re: It sucks to be American sometimes.....
That looks promising, but I run a porn site and their TOS say you can't host porn on their services. Please don't ask for the web address.

Re: It sucks to be American sometimes.....
Not really. I found TMZVPS for 20/month which looks reasonable. I pay 10/month now with four domains in a shared account, but I'd like to move to a VPS.

Re: It sucks to be American sometimes.....
I wish I understood enough to use any of the ideas in this thread. But then this is what the powers that be want. A world full of people who have no clue blindly using cyberspace in ways that they may not like nor want and probably do not even know is going on.
People tolerate things online that they would never accept in the real world. Folks do not care their every move online can be watched and recorded. But if a team of people followed one around all day recording everything they did, there would be one heck of an outcry. Do this in cyberspace and the same individual could care less.
So, I find myself not doing the sort of things most Americans do. I refuse to use social media. I do not use a smart phone. I do not game (unless poker counts). I have never visited an app store etc. This may make me feel somewhat safer in terms of privacy. But the downside is my behavior makes me look criminal in the eyes of most authorities.
Officer: Give us your smart phone.
Me : I don't have one.
Officer: I do not believe you, where is your phone?
Me: *Hands over my flip phone.*
Officer: What is your FaceBook password?
Me. I don't have one, I never go to Facebook.
Officer: I don't believe you, give us your password.
Me: I am not on any social media. I can give you a list of the Tropical fish sites I regularly visit?
Officer: O.K. then give us your tablet or laptop or both.
Me. Sorry, I don't have those either.
Officer: Send for S.W.A.T. this guy is clearly dangerous...........

I was just reading this yesterday and was thinking 'welcome to what us in the UK are subjected to'.
I now constantly use a VPN, was originally only going to use it for torrenting, but there is no difference in speed so just leave it on for most of the time. And with servers closer to me than my ISPs' and servers all round the world it's a win win situation, ok it costs me a few £££s extra every 3 months but well worth it. No tracking, logging etc and most importantly NO CENSORSHIP of the net.

That's the minimum price for a Digital Ocean droplet. It's not much of a VPS, and I haven't used their service or even read their TOS, so I don't know if they're any good, but that's the cheapest I've heard of.John connor wrote:Where do you buy a VPS for $5?

Small droplets also have limited transfer.Andrew Gilbertson wrote:That's the minimum price for a Digital Ocean droplet.
I'd rather pay $2 more and get actually unmetered connections. And double the ram, 4x the CPU, 3x the disk space (great if you're setting up a caching proxy to help with speed), guaranteed Gbit port and no bandwidth restrictions... You really can't beat Afterburst's prices for that.

I think you might be exaggerating a bit here.

And then they would refuse to admit you to the country and put you back on a plane home or from whence you came. Unless you are a US citizen or green card holder, they can do exactly that. http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/03/30/how-to-safeguard-your-data-at-us-border.htmlMoonchild wrote:My response would be: not without a court order.TwoTankAmin wrote:Officer: Give us your smart phone.
In my case they can simply confiscate my phone and I may not see it back for months. they can try and crack it and get at the data first if they want. In my case they can have my flip phone. I only use it to make voice calls and never use it to access the net. It is only turned on and used when I am away from home. There is nothing stored on it and it has no password. I do not use the cloud.

Sure they can. And I wouldn't complain at that moment. But I would make a stink out of it in the mediaTwoTankAmin wrote:And then they would refuse to admit you to the country and put you back on a plane home or from whence you came.
After all, I don't know if most US citizens realize this or not, but the USA has been in a state of emergency for an incredibly long time, which gives many people in the government and authorities powers they should not have unless in a state of war. But they still wouldn't get my private electronic devices by asking for it.
