By default PM4A tries to connect to the sync server using an old clusterURL that does not work. You need to change the clusterURL to the new one.
Off-topic:
Some semi-relevant information:
  • I was never able to configure PM4A sync client using J-PAKE
  • For some unknown reasons sending a link form PM4A to PC Pale Moon stopped working when Pale Moon 28 was released. Sending a link from Pale Moon 28 to PM4A (using this add-on) works correctly, though.

How to change the clusterURL? It's on about:config in PM desktop but not on PM Android. I tried adding manually but it doesn't work.

Is there any way to sync PM desktop with any Android browser? I don't mind moving to another browser on Android, but not having my desktop bookmarks is annoying.

what to do if it is a fresh install and there is no /data/data/org.palemoon.android/shared_prefs/sync.prefs.org!palemoon!android.*.default.1.xml file to edit?
I tried to copy from another device but obviously the unique id doesn't match and so it's ignored

the sync setup screen is unresponsive, logcat being filled with:

You need to set the correct j-pake server. Since Pale Moon 26, this address has changed.

Find services.sync.jpake.serverURL in about:config on your android installation, and set it to https://keyserver.palemoon.org/

After that, you should be able to use the 12-character setup to link the install.

the android install is 25.9.6 (thought it's the last, btw.) and there is no such key in about:config

You're right. I'm afraid it's not going to be possible in that case.
In addition, I'm pretty sure Pale Moon 25.6 is not able to use proper encryption for that server anyway, so a manual setup is the only way in that case, see above.

So you mean, from now on, it is definitely impossible to setup sync on a fresh install of PM4A? It is really very bad news :(
I'm running my selfhosted Nextcloud based v1.1 sync server, working flawlessly with all my desktop palemoons, and has been working with the droids too, until now.
Do you know any browser for Android, that still supports the v1.1 sync protocol?

J-PAKE is not required to setup Sync in PM4A...

Allright, then how do you set it up today, in a freshly installed PM4A? You get the not responding screen shown in the first post of this topic, and your log filled with the errors shown in my first post, untill you kill palemoon! Tried on three different devices today.

it's not, but that is what throws the error.

Using a manual setup as indicated above should work.
If it doesn't I'm sorry -- PM4A really is no longer supported so I can't help any more. Maybe someone else can assist getting it to work, but please understand that your usability of the browser will be limited (and getting worse by the day). For the record, also, PM4A might not at all work well on later versions of android (5 or above) so that's an extra hurdle.

As I say to most people using android, If your phone is more than a year old, google says it is **ancient**, so switch off all updates (get a good backup app, in case bad things happen..), that will only waste time, memory and battery!!

- if your phone is brand new, forget getting anything 'old' to work on it... :(

I would like to report that I successfully managed to set up sync on PM4A by using the advanced configuration option from the smartphone app. I've inserted my account e-mail, password and recovery key and selected the option "custom server", writing there "https://pmsync.palemoon.org/sync/index.php/" . After that sync worked, nothing else was needed
