FF Android webbrowser

Unread post by dapgo » 2018-04-09, 15:14

I was a happy user of PM 25 for Android, it runs smoothly but as time is passing, I find more and more pages which doesn't load or render properly.
Though for some pages I am still using PM25 because it is lighter and faster than others, for other pages I need a more updated browser.

I am aware of some browser based in webkit engine, even lightweight versions like lighting, Mercury,etc....

However, based in Gecko/FF engine, Firefox and Fennec are too heavy, slow and unresponsive in my device (Android v4.3).
Waterfox55 works much better than the previous but is still very heavy and some times unresponsive.

is there any lightweight browser based in gecko? does it support addins?
What are u using in devices with some years?

dapgo, I still use Pale Moon 25 as my primary browser on my Huawei MediaPad M3 tablet. Occasionally, I come upon a site it doesn't handle well, but not all that often. I do have do have two other browsers on the tablet: Dolphin and Chrome. I like Dolphin quite a bit, and in fact it's the primary browser on my older, space-challenged phone that runs Android 4.2 (I finally removed Pale Moon from the phone because I was so hard-pressed for space, and Dolphin was smaller.) The only add-ons I have on Dolphin are LastPass and something called Web to PDF. I don't think they're Mozilla add-ons, and I doubt that Mozilla add-ons would work on Dolphin, and of course now less and less on Pale Moon. As for Chrome, it came with the tablet, but I almost never use it. I keep it for the very few times that a site seems designed to work well only with Chrome.

I strongly doubt that Dolphin is gecko-based, but that's not something I pay a lot of attention to, especially not on Android. If you're interested in Dolphin, you can find it in Google's Play Store.

I used to use Dolphin as my main browser for quite a while, but it was always a bit unstable, and when I found out that they track every URL I visit, I got rid of it.

I still use old Pale Moon with a custom user agent for certain sites, but for general browsing I use Brave now. Flynx is also an interesting "browser" to try out, but Brave does everything I need except block sites from detecting that I'm using a mobile. (Facebook and Reddit are really irritating with their constant nags to install their apps).

Thanks for your feedback about Dolphin, Rising Soul. I haven't noticed any instability in either my tablet or my phone. However, I'm interested in what you say about Dolphin's tracking every URL I go to. How can I find this out?

After reading your message, I also took a quick look at Brave at the Play Store. Lots of people liked it, but lots of other people complained that they kept getting ads--even ads for the Brave ad blocker--after installing it. Since I'm not sure Last Pass will work with it, and it doesn't seem to have a web-to-pdf feature, I think for the moment I'll stay with Pale Moon as my primary browser on the tablet and Dolphin on the phone. But I am curious about your claim that Dolphin tracks my every move.

Since some of you use both Pale Moon Android and Dolphin, do any of you know a way to stop "Open With Dolphin App" from coming up as the first item on every link's context menu if you have both programs installed?

Bohandas, I don't have that problem. When I touch an icon or URL I want to open, I get a pop-up box that says either "Complete Action Using" or "Open With" and a box of icons of possible programs to use, including both Pale Moon and Dolphin. Also, I can specify "Just Once" or "Always." I always specify Just Once, so that I always have a choice. I suspect if I chose "always," I wouldn't get the pop-up box for that site or file in the future.

I mean the long press context menu for regular links (not download links). The one with things like "Open in new tab", "copy link", etc.

I open lots of tabs and it's an inconvenience if "open in new tab" gets displaced from the top

Bohandas, I don't seem to have that issue. "Open in New Tab" is at the top regardless of whether I'm using Dolphin or Pale Moon.

Still using PM on my older phone and I don't find many incompatible pages.

On my newer phone I've finally uninstalled PM and now use both FF (good for extensions) and Samsung Internet Browser (now available for all Android phones from v5 up, and very good for saving pages as PDFs). But that's not going to help you on Android v4.3, unfortunately.

Forked extensions :
● Add-ons Inspector ● Auto Text Link ● Copy As Plain Text ● Copy Hyperlink Text ● FireFTP button replacement ● gSearch Bar ● Navigation Bar Enhancer ● New Tab Links ● Number Tabs ● Print Preview Button and Keyboard Shortcut 2 ● Scrollbar Search Marker ● Simple Marker ● Tabs To Portfolio ● Update Alert ● Web Developer's Toolbox ● Zap Anything

Hint: If you expect a reply to your PM, allow replies...

Thanks very much, Falna, for the URL. I read the article, which was written two years ago. Perhaps the information is outdated, but I was unable to find the file it told me to look for: "If you’re wondering whether or not Dolphin Browser is tracking what you’re browsing on the web, head to this filepath on your Android device: /data/data/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser/shared_prefs/ . There you’ll find the file playHistory.xml as well as similar files – search and see." I did search, and I found a file under Android/data/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser/, but not shared_prefs. What I found was cache/uil-images/journal. This was a 31byte file that contained almost nothing. So perhaps what was true two years ago is no longer the case? I might also note that I'm not all that concerned about someone keeping a record of every video I've watched on my device. Netflix has a very extensive record of every movie and video it has sent me over the years, including in many cases my rating. I suspect that I might not like all the uses that Netflix makes of this information, but at least in this case, for me the plusses outweigh the minuses.

I can easily imagine a situation where I would definitely not want anyone to have a record of what videos I looked at. If I were looking at porn videos, for example, or videos explaining how to make a bomb, privacy might well be a top concern. And I recognize that many people who watch less "problematic" videos might also have a very legitimate concern with privacy. But after reading the article, I'm not convinced that Dolphin is currently a problem, at least on my device.
