Image rendering issues in 24.5

Unread post by aliceif » 2014-04-26, 04:58

When I replaced the previous version of palemoon4linux with the new one, image rendering became weird on some websites and in the quick access page:
Image
Image
As you can see, some favicons and some images on some websites are displayed incorrectly and the new tab page is also displayed incorrectly. This did not happen in 24.4.2. No other packages were changed when upgrading palemoon.

Very unlikely to be related to Pale Moon itself -- and more likely to be an issue with graphics drivers.

Specs of your graphics hardware? Did you try disabling h/w acceleration? Does rolling back to an old version help?

I typed in the address (lunaticobscurity)in the Show button and the page renders perfectly for me. No problems. Can't help on the New Tab Page since I have it to show a blank page in linux Pale Moon (64-bit) and hardware acceleration is turned off.

The graphics card installed in this desktop computer I'm typing this message on is a Nvidia (GeForce 220) with the 319 driver for linux SolydX.

Doing a bit of experimenting, it seems that only lunaticobscurity gives me that problem, and it occurs regardless of what hardware I try it on. Other pages seem to be fine (including about:newtab).

Although at this moment I don't have much time on my hands, so I'll have a look into this problem next week. Can you specify which version (i686/x86_64) is having this problem?

Perhaps a problem with the system-installed libpng?

Pale Moon wasn't compiled with --with_system_* so, no.

I'll have to check whether the recent update in the toolchains I use have anything to do with it. Also have to check if FF ESR and Nightly show these anomalies. But somehow I suspect there won't be any problems with the above.

Moonchild, were there any code changes to the graphics related parts in 24.4.2-> 24.5.0? I _do_ see a few changes that could be of interest, but I get "access denied" on those...

I've also encountered this issue with Pale Moon 24.5.0 on my two SolydK boxes, both the i686 and the x86_64 version. Largely noticed it with the about:newtab page and thumbnail images on imgur.com. I rolled back to 24.4.2 in the meantime since that version works just fine.

Here are the inxi -Gxx results from both boxes if that will help:

i686:

My system is a rather new Ultrabook with a Haswell-series corei5 and a GeForce 820M.
Because Xubuntu 13.10 is using a Kernel that doesn't seem to support my GPU's driver, I only have intel graphics drivers installed, and not noveau or Nvidia's propietary ones.

I am using the x64 build of palemoon. Hardware acceleration didn't change a thing.
Right now I am using 24.4.2 again, which is displaying images perfectly.

And the website shown isn't the only one where such errors happen. On a few forums avatars hosted on various image sites also aren't displayed correctly.

Yeah, seems you're right. Every other site seems to be broken, even images on my local server :(
Please use 24.4.2 while I investigate the issues. I've also staged the 24.5.0 folder to prevent other people downloading this version. The updater should allow you to roll back to 24.4.2.

The recent transition from gcc/g++ 4.7.2->4.8.2 seems to be the cause of the problem (although I'm not sure why the compiler would break image decoding). Pale Moon 24.5.0 built with previous gcc/g++ versions will be released tomorrow.

Will this be version 24.5.1?

Yeah, always be very careful when upgrading your compiler. You have to realize that the code is very complex, and compiler bugs are relatively commonplace to pop up when building Firefox code. If you have a compiler that works, stick with it.

Image decoding uses highly optimized machine code (lots of inline asm etc.) - it's needed because it's a "critical path" where every CPU tick counts, but of course makes it very sensitive to any compiler or linker bugs.

Better not. I don't think a special version # would be needed but you could mark it as "r2" or something? Depends on how many people downloaded the first build before it was pulled off the wire, I guess.

No, this will be 24.5.0. I'll not bump version numbers for something not involving code changes. And r2 will not match the rather aggressive regex used in the installer, so I will stick to the above.

You have to do a full uninstall+install if you're using the installer and updated to the broken version.
