Passwords are not saved

Unread post by paulimieze » 2021-02-07, 07:10

Hello there,
I'm updated from 27.x to 29.0.0 today. In Win (at work and in a VirtualBox-Environment at home) everything is ok, so it seems to be a Linux problem).
The short version:
- no "Master password" possible
- no Import of exported PW possible (with palemoon-AddOn)
- tried to put login-information into sites by hand
- dialog "Save password?" pops up
- no Passwords are saved !?!?

Long story:
In my 16.04-Ubuntu I wanted to upgrade to pale moon 29.0. There are some reasons for me using this parallel to 20.04, but that's another story. 20.04 I didn't test yet. But even if that works it wouldn't help me. because I have to do that for a specific project in 16.04 (both LTS by the way).
First I tested with the "not-necessary-to-install-version". Everything works fine (Add-Ons. languge pack, bookmarks). "Saved passwords" were empty.
So I Installed the AddOn for my 27.x and exported Passwords. Then I installed the "really" new version with installer. At this point all was as "hoped and expected".
Installed the Password-Exp/Imp for 29.0 and tried to import the exported PW from above.
Red Text: 0/49 imported. "You didn't use a master passwort".
Master password: I'm not able to set one! "Error - Master password couldn't be changed" (Tried MANY times with restarts etc.)
Ok, not really nice but if he don't like me today...
Put the usernames and PW for all accounts by hand into pale moon. After two or three I wanted to check the entries. "Saved passwords" is EMPTY!
Folders and files are r/w, installed the right version - restarted pale moon and at last the PC - no change in the behavior! Can't save passwords...

Is there any hint, explanation or solution for this problem?

Greetings,
Dirk

You need to watershed through a version that will convert the password store.

Thanks, moonchild!
But that means, it will never work because I've already updated to 29 without that "pit stop" at 28.17.xx !?!
That's not amusing, but ok if there's no way to automatically import the old values.

But why I can't save any NEW login username/password ???
That's my problem now - 29.0 should have installed it's own new database, shouldn it?
Or did I "destroy" that with my attempt of importing old logins/passwords?

Greetings,
Dirk

Try performing the following steps:

1. Install Pale Moon 28.16.0 from the archive server http://archive.palemoon.org
2. Start it, and check if your passwords are there and everything else works like master password etc.
3. If not, do the following:
3a. go to help -> troubleshooting information. Find the "profile" entry with a button "open folder"
3b. keep the explorer window open, but exit Pale Moon.
3c. in the folder opened in explorer, remove cert9.db and key4.db
3d. Start Pale Moon 28.16 again, then go back to step 2
4. Exit Pale Moon, and install the latest version
5. Start it, and check if your passwords are there.

Hi moonchild,
so I had to do the "Version-jumping" - I didn't dare to do that myself because I was afraid that everything is broken now.
And you were right - it seems that everything is working fine now.

Thanks!

Well I did write that Profile Migration page for a very good reason.

Glad you got it solved with the steps outlined! As you see it serves to keep your Pale Moon at least somewhat regularly updated, so this kind of stuff doesn't happen due to huge version jumps.
