Pale Moon Install on old 32-bit Sony Vaio Picturebook PCG-C1MZX

Hi,

Recently installed antiX linux on my old Sony Vaio Picturebook PCG-C1MZX laptop (32-bit TM5800 933MHz, 384MB RAM).

Overall, works great.

However, in order to use internet while I am at my work place, I have to use the guest network there. It uses a captive portal page, that you need to have browser open the page and then you have to click on the button on that page to agree to terms and condition of usage.

I tried using Dillo and elinks that came with antiX install, but they won't go the login page.

Tried Firefox ESR that came with antiX install, but it won't open.

Someone on antiX forum suggested that I try Pale Moon.

I tried installing it using 'package installer' program on antiX. It gave me option to install the 32-bit, non-SSE2 version.
Installer message said it installed it.

However, when I look for Pale Moon in list of available 'Internet' programs, it is not listed. I logged out and back in.....

Tried opening it in terminal, but I get message:

bash: palemoon: command not found

Did Pale Moon not really install itself or ?

The official build needs SSE2.
I don't know that up-to-date builds of non-SSE2 version exist.

There are some old versions in the repo.

As noted in my post above, the antiX package installer found a 32-bit, non-SSE2 version to install and message said it was installed.

Unfortunately, now at work, so, can't connect to guest network due to browser situation. Can try what you suggest tonight when I get home.

Also, if you need captive portal detection you have to enable it yourself in preferences. For privacy reasons we don't enable that out of the box.

You may need to install mlocate or similar first, but it's often already installed.

(one possibility, but will give loads of results:)
$ locate /palemoon
(run-mozilla.sh will probably be in the directory you want and give fewer results but might not be as who knows how it was packaged)
$ locate run-mozilla.sh
(check it's the executable file, my result below is for a 64-bit version not 32-bit:)
$ file /path/to/palemoon
/opt/pale_moon/palemoon/palemoon: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 2.6.32, BuildID[sha1]=98e4edc64ee8a0c4e59a913d13a2ef1a920b7129, stripped
(run it:)
$ /path/to/palemoon
(or in that dir:)
$ ./palemoon

Clearly there are better / easier ways to start an app, normally they would be included in a package, but if Pale Moon is installed then it should find it and start it. If it still won't start then perhaps it will provide some error messages in the terminal that might help find the problem.

Yes, it looks that way. (And not that it matters here, /path/to means replace path to with the parent directories, whatever they are - so it is the path to the location of the relevant file, but there wasn't one.)
Looking about possibly you would have to enable the mx repo and then disable it after installing Pale Moon, or download the deb and install it from that - but antiX users could give you better advice on the exact / best procedure as I'm not actually using antiX, although have done in the past and thought it was very good.

PaleMoon-nonsse2 Loaded, with NoScript active, one tab on antiX forum – 191M
Note – installed PM from .deb file using gdebi. MX-17 repository.

You can install downloaded deb's with dpkg -i but might need to resolve (install) dependencies yourself, gdebi could be simpler from the look of things, although I've not used it.

I started by posting in antiX forum, got some input, including the suggestion to try Pale Moon. But when I had issue with opening up Pale Moon, I thought it might an issue specific to Pale Moon. So, posted here.

Will try over there again, unless someone else has any other suggestions.

I'm sorry, but this is also a bit too old to browser most sites because it is too slow to process the scripts.
If you have any x86 CPU with SSE2, then you can install Pale Moon from Steve's repo, it is still available for 32 bit.

Got Pale Moon installed and running on Vaio!

Installed using apt install in terminal and Voila! it worked!



Runs a bit slow, as you can imagine, but for the times I need a browser like this, it is good solution.
