Re: Siren/ Alarm intermittent
Maybe make a recording of the sound?
Unless it's really an ad as suggested by tobin, being able to hear the sound might give some hints.

After taking @vannilla's advice, I'd suggest confirming through PulseAudio (if you have it installed) that the sound is coming from Pale Moon -- be it a browser tab or whatever. I'm not sure what desktop environment you're using, be it XFCE, KDE, GNOME, MATE whatever -- but at least in MATE you can go to Applications -> Sound & Video -> Sound, then in the dialog that pops up, click the "Applications" tab. Keep that tab open until the sound comes back, then run over to the computer and see who's playing audio.
You can also try installing an adblocker, and if the sound goes away then well, it was probably an ad!

I'd advise you not listen to The Squash no matter what he says. Though, I am starting to think this issue is fake.

What's intrinsically wrong with what I said?

You're just floundering to boost your self esteem with a Ralph Wiggum declaration of "I'm helping". It is not materially helping anyone. Go back to your vaporware.
Re: Siren/ Alarm intermittent
Hey. I was suggesting an adblocker. That's basically a step up from what you yourself said earlier -- my advice is really not that radical at all.
What have you really got to complain about?

The fact that you never have anything original to say and you are a drain on PM infrastructure by merely existing.

Well, we don't know if Mint includes anything that may make an audio notification if some limit exceeded, but I've never heard of it, and I think it would go over among users like a lead balloon. I know of ways to do something like that with packages in the repos, but we'd never do that for MX Linux!
Are you using my OBS repo for Mint, or getting the binaries from Pale Moon? (though that should not make any difference)

Re: Siren/ Alarm intermittent
Are you using the default theme? Some themes (admittedly my own included) don't show the sound icon for tabs.

Ahem! Don't believe in ghosts? Well, is this ghost real fake or ist this fake-ghost real?
To be a fake, or not to be a ghost, that is the question! I have noooo clue
In another forum ghost hunters are also poking around
in that eerily drrrrrrrrrahhhhhhhh-howling scary fog!
The OP should urgently hire a professional ghost hunting specialist, e.g. John Sinclair, Jason Hawes,
Steven A. LaChance or Troy Taylor! Surely they will find the ghost named Drrrrrrrrrahhhhhhhh

Re: Siren/ Alarm intermittent
Is the sound one of the files installed in /usr/share/sounds? You can play them in a media player. If it was some kind of warning or alarm clock on your system then the sound file itself could be in there, although even if it seemed not to be, if it was a very short sound being played repeatedly it might not sound the same. But if it was there it would be a useful clue.
Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been...
Re: Siren/ Alarm intermittent
Like I said earlier, keep a list of applications using PulseAudio open, and also try @RealityRipple's advice of switching your theme to the default one which definitely shows speaker icons.

Damn--I'm trying desperately to come up with some way to work "Whoop! There it is!" into an answer, but don't have enough room in the margin...
Though if you pour copious amounts of holy water onto a possessed machine, that will certainly stop any howling, along with all other activity, paranormal or otherwise.

Re: Siren/ Alarm intermittent
- Does it matter which sites you visit(ed) till it occurred?
- Distinguishing the sound of the speakers from the rest of the sound making hardware (PC Beep speaker?) is quite easy by plugging in headphones. (Unless you already fiddled in your PulseAudio config to prioritize the speakers or Mini Display Port over the headphones).
- Run in a terminal. Stay it as it is.
Code: Select all
journalctl --follow --priority=debug > ~/drrrrrrrrrahhhhhhhh.log
- Open Pale Moon and do what you did before you got that alarm sound.
- When the alarm occurred, write down the time somewhere.
- After you closed Pale Moon to kill that alarm sound, hit Ctrl+C in the terminal. The command will be intended terminated.
- Open drrrrrrrrrahhhhhhhh.log (which you could find in your home directory) with a text editor. Slim it down to a few minutes before the alarm occurred and search-replace your name with USER and your hostname with HOSTNAME.
- Post the modified version of drrrrrrrrrahhhhhhhh.log in this topic.
Re: Siren/ Alarm intermittent
I can forgive you for not reading this post from the OP, between me and another person bickering about whether this is fake or not. TL;DR: It's coming from the sound card -- the sound emanates from the headphones. Plus few laptops per se have a separate PC speaker.RoestVrijStaal wrote: ↑2020-10-20, 23:20Distinguishing the sound of the speakers from the rest of the sound making hardware (PC Beep speaker?) is quite easy by plugging in headphones.
