Pale Moon dumped core

Post by smithy » 2020-07-05, 22:57

Hi
I use Linux Mint Cinnamon
Pale Moon Version: 28.10.0 (64-bit)
Theme: Fox2 the moon 4.6.0
No plugins
Extensions:
Decentraleyes

uBlock Origin

This may or may not be significant, so my apologies if I'm wasting your time.
I was actually watching a movie on TV, while waiting for a download to complete. When I went back to it, it had failed two thirds of the way through.
I usually then check the Log files in case it was a program or hardware error.
This was the message I got.
This usually indicates a programming error in the crashing program and
should be reported to its vendor as a bug
.

So here I am :)
I should point out that if I hadn't checked the log file I wouldn't have known anything about it. But it sounds like its worth reporting.

Here is what the log said and below that the trouble shooting info.

I should add I was downloading with Basilisk.
I wasn’t browsing with Pale Moon when it crashed, although it might have been open.
Bit vague, I know..

Did you have it open on a specific page while leaving it idle?
Downloading something in basilisk won't affect anything in a different application.

Hi
I honestly couldn't tell you what page was open, mainly because it was a hour or so after the time of the crash that I checked the logs..
Besides which I tend to browse in the "now", not caring about history etc. On top of that I usually visit the same sites regularly which have never given me problems in the past. Such is life in lockdown :)
There is "System Reports" in linux mint, which I thought might be helpful, but while it recognizes the crash, it can give no detail on the crash, and no info on how I could adjust my settings to provide any info in the future. (see screenshot below)
Looks like that ends that :)
Thanks for the excellent browser. You guys work wonders. :)

Is there a file of the form "palemoon.crash" in the directory "/var/crash"?

The file may be preceded by a long string of digits.

Also check for a file called "core" in your home directory and in the "palemoon" directory under your home directory.

Hi
No, nothing in the Var directory entitled Pale moon or crash. I searched the whole system for the word crash with no meaningful results.
The only file named "core" I found was 2.1Gb in size. I found that by pressing the "Local files" button on the system report
Screenshot from 2020-07-06 23-50-50.png
The only crash report is the file from the logs which I reproduced part of in my original post, most of which I suspect has bugger all to do with Pale Moon
Here it is for what its worth..

Please attach your ".xsession-errors" file. It is located in your home directory. It is a hidden file so you may need to set your file manager up to display hidden files.

Well, that file doesn't say anything about Pale Moon at all. I'm guessing you've logged out or rebooted since the crash occurred.

If this crash happened the previous time you booted up, please attach your ".xsession-errors.old" to a post.

Hi
Nothing worth looking at in xsessions.old.
Thanks anyway. If it happens again, I’ll have more of an idea of where to look and what to save.

Off-topic:
If your distro uses systemd, which is most likely the case, you can view the saved crashes and crash dumps using coredumpctl command.

“No coredumps found”

However I’ll add the command to my long list of useful terminal commands. ;)

I was wondering if the fact I usually surf in private mode had anything to do with the lack of info?
From what I know it doesn’t seem likely, but I’m no expert..

Not significantly.

Also is this the official Pale Moon as found in tarballs, or is it an officially endorsed build? Are you perhaps using Steve Pusser's build? This makes a difference, since the people who build the officially endorsed builds are using different compilation tools than the people behind the "true" official build.

I use the download from the Pale Moon site, the tarballs version.

Also I don’t tend to do much tweaking in about:config these days if at all. I found you can create a real disaster zone if you tweak without really understanding. Apart from which I tend to forget what setting I’ve changed which makes matters worse . A mans gotta know his limitations😂

Re: Pale Moon dumped core

Post by smithy » 2020-07-15, 09:04

Hi
It has happened again.
However I did a clean install of Linux Mint 20 a few days ago. Also updated Pale Moon yesterday to latest version..
Exactly the same set up as before regarding plugins and themes etc.
I had Pale Moon open with approx 6 Tabs. I then closed Pale Moon completely, and a few minutes later tried to restart it.
I got a message saying Pale Moon was already running and that I should close it first.
I waited a few minutes and it opened successfully.
Again when looking at the logs I had a dumped core message, with this message. Hopefully a bit more helpful.

Process 13282 (palemoon) of user 1000 dumped core.

Stack trace of thread 17763:
#0 0x00007f89b734024b raise (libpthread.so.0 + 0x1524b)
#1 0x00007f89b330c056 n/a (/home/martin/palemoon/libxul.so + 0x28ac056)

I could probably reproduce it if needed. Also the pages I closed I am certain weren't the same as before..

Running coredumpctl in the terminal produced this.

After a few minutes when I tried to went to close the terminal it said it was still running.
I closed it anyway..

Okay
I did a little research on coredumpctl command, and managed to get this..

martin@martin-ThinkPad-T430:~$ coredumpctl info 13282

The line:

leads to these files. Any use to upload?

If you want a coredump then you have to enable coredumps first, as they are set to 0 bytes max size as default. Otherwise you would clog up your system with them as they might be 10's of MB each. Also they are pretty useless unless you first rebuild the app with debugging symbols so you can get a proper backtrace when you run them with GDB. It might be difficult for anyone else to get the backtrace on another OS, because they have to recreate the libs you built the app with, so you should use GDB yourself ideally. If you learn how to do all that you can get a backtrace which might narrow down the issue, but still not always result in anything fixable. :)
If you want to debug this then probably the first thing is to figure out exactly what causes it, what particular web site interaction makes this happen. Define the problem so it can be reproduced. Also you might get some clues running Pale Moon from the command line in case it gives some error messages when it crashes.

Thanks Lunokhod
That is really totally out of my depth. Ive never built an App in my life, let alone debugged one.
I really only wanted to help the developers iron out a few wrinkles I came across.
With all the talk (and rants :) ) about extensions, I was thinking of learning more on how to make them Pale Moon compatible. I reckon that would be more in line with my capabilities...hopefully.
Cheers
