search engines

Post by puppyX » 2020-02-08, 12:13

How are new search engines added to the list ? I want to add 5 new engines but when 'manage search engine list' is opened it doesn't have the option of adding the engines I choose. How is that addition done ? Either I've forgotten or the options have changed because the old list on my other PC is still in place.

Sorry, unable to post a screen shot. Linux Trisquel only giving me png

Download a search plugin and it will be added to the list of search engines.
Look at https://addons.palemoon.org/search-plugins/ and see if there are the ones you are looking for.
And what's wrong about PNG?

If you go to a search engine home page, e.g.
https://www.gigablast.com/
there is often something like "Add Gigablast to your browser's search engines" and if you click on it then it does what it says.
Also if you press the arrow on the left of the Pale Moon search box you can click manage search engines > add search engines. But I guess the ones you want aren't in there.

Have managed to add a few more search engines, thanks.

As for the png picture I tried to drag and drop and load as an attachment. Nothing happens.

Have you tried the old method of clicking on buttons?

Any chance of adding additional search plugins?

I would like to add some listed on https://mycroftproject.com/

Is there a way to add plugins not already listed on Palemoon site?

I remember previously being able to add search plugins as I wanted without any limitations.

What's preventing you from adding them? You can add anything from Mycroft directly. Just click.

Not sure if this is stupid or obvious (on top of being late) but if you have DDG as your default engine you might have !bangs available, look them up here: https://duckduckgo.com/bang?#bangs-list
It's the nicest feature of DDG, i.e. for mycroftproject it's !mycroft

We know what it looks like. If you wanted to say something specific about it then do so?

For the record, adding search engines on the fly when websites offer opensearch in their meta works just fine. example bugzilla:
Image1.png
And for the people interested in the technicalities it's triggered by a little bit of page header magic:

Code: Select all

<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" title="Bugzilla@Mozilla" href="/search_plugin.cgi">
where the cgi spits out valid searchplugin XML code, but may as well have been served static (although it being a cgi script is probably so they can gather telemetry on how any people use this).

FYI I was referring to problem adding plugins in MX Linux. I was attempting to add searchencrypt.com as a plugin. In the end I found an alternative way to do so. I'm not an idiot & I resent your ignorant & condescending replies. This is the very reason that many people have abandoned using Palemoon. Check your manners at the door!

Why would your operating system matter when you're adding a search plugin from a webpage?

And how hard is it to search for the plugin you want in the highlighted search field, then click on the highlighted search result to pop up a prompt?

Far more people use the browser than frequent the forums, let alone get so offended over responses as to leave. And the lead developers here are quite helpful but have no patience with people asking stuff that's been answered many times before, or patently obvious stuff like this. Here you will get actual help from the community if you both do your homework first (search the forums for existing solutions before posting) and ask nicely(by including troubleshooting info as relevant).

You can compare what they do over at Mozilla where you'll be asked to file a bug which will be WONTFIXED, or Google where your choices are exactly take it or leave it because Chrome and its derivatives rule the browser market.

And this is exactly the kind of attitude that will have me give you a cold shoulder henceforth. I'm informative in my reply and this is the response? Come on. Be a little more mature, will you?
Someone else can help you, if they feel the need to.
