28.5.2: Copy/paste problems on X11 ?

Unread post by DNied » 2019-06-10, 21:32

Is anyone else seeing problems with X11 copy/paste from the browser to a different application?

Pasting to urxvt doesn't seem to work correctly any more: the pasted string is not the latest selection made in the browser.

I don't have urxvt, but selecting & pasting between Pale Moon and other GTK applications (including Pale Moon itself) works correctly on my end.
I have some applications refusing the primary selection, but I can paste text there with the usual clipboard commands and it works as intended.

I am running a Puppylinux based on Debian 9 binaries, Dpup Stretch-7.5 RC4, and write this in PM 28.5.2. I use only urxvt as terminal window, and have not had any problems so far, see attachment:

I've been a user of various X*-style graphical systems since Project Athena and cut and paste has been chronically broken for over 30 years. Ctrl-C, middle-mouse, etc. It's never worked consistently under any UNIX environment whatsoever, without any exception. If Palemoon somehow made this work properly, they would have been nominated for the Nobel Prize, but since this hasn't happened, I can only assume X* cut-and-paste is still broken.

Odd. I'm having no problems pasting into urxvt from other applications (xclipboard, zim). I can also paste from the newest PaleMoon into xclipboard and zim, as long as I hit "Copy" (apparently, selecting the text is no longer enough). But I still can't get the newest PaleMoon -- even in safe mode, no extensions -- to paste into urxvt. This used to work. And urxvt hasn't been updated in 2 years... :eh:

Middle click to paste selected text is something I use regularily and never met any problem. I can tell you that if the paste wasn't working was because of an error on my part.
For anyone that doesn't know, selecting text is different than using Ctrl+C, so if you mix them you get different pasted data.

More surprise for you!

I also use urxvt on Arch. I have no issues copy-pasting thing to and from Pale Moon.

I use the following to paste in urxvt:
X11 selection ---> Shift+Insert
Copy (Ctrl + C) ---> Alt+Shift+V

Caveat:
If you copy something and then quit Pale Moon, clipboard contents are gone -- no paste.

No issue copying from Pale Moon paste to URxvt on me.

I run Devuan stable/URxvt - X11 Openbox.

Keyboard
CTRL+ALT+V = paste OK

Mouse
Middle-click = paste OK

I must correct myself, I may have misunderstood the problem. I thought it was related to a general copy/paste problem, not the keyboard commands.
Within a couple of months, I have been a Linux user for 20 years. I don't think that I ever used Copy and Paste in a terminal window, in the form of the commands, or with keys Ctrl-C or Ctrl-V. Is that some kind of Windows inheritance?
I select text with the left mousebutton, and paste with the middle mousebutton, the Linux way. I use urxvt now, but xterm earlier.
Tested for this occasion from keyboard; Ctrl+Alt+C to copy, Ctrl+Alt+V to paste, also works.
