menu bar is in the wrong location

Unread post by lpermt » 2018-08-07, 18:01

Suddenly, my menu bar has moved down and I can't get it back to the top of the window; the toolbar order is now:
[window title]
navigation bar
bookmarks
open tabs
menu <=====
PrefBar

How can I bring it back to where it belongs, between the window title and the navigation bar? There were no (known, intentional) changes at all, and the menu bar was in the correct place after the last reboot a day and a half ago.
Pale Moon 27.9.3 (64 bit)
Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon

Thanks,

I"m assuming the Customize Toolbar window is still functioning. Can you use the Customize Toolbar window to move the Menu Bar back to where you want it?

BTW, I'm using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 27.9.4 running in 64 bit linux Mint 19 (Tara) Xfce.
Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
MX Linux 23.2 (Libretto) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
Linux Debian 12.5 (Bookworm) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox

Right-click on the menu, left-click on "Customize", move the menu where you want, and close the customize window to finish :).

Unfortunately, that does not work. When I get in "customize" mode the menu bar gets grayed out, and if I try to move it with the mouse a pale copy moves along but it jumps right back to its wrong location as soon as it is released. Customization does work as usual to move icons on and off toolbars, however.

What happens if you restart in Safe Mode?

Thinking you had an extension to allow this, or you were using some CSS to do it?

What theme are you using?

Aha! In safe mode the menu is back in the right place, but it's wrong again in normal mode. I'm using the default theme, and no CSS involving the toolbars.
I suppose it could be a stealth add-on update. I'll have to disable them systematically and I'll report tomorrow.
Thanks.

Well, it looks like it's not an add-on after all: The menu is in the right place in safe mode, but if I disable all the add-ons manually in normal mode (and restart) it falls back to the wrong location.

Exit PM.

In your Profile folder, rename the file, xulstore.json, to xulstore.json.OLD.

Start PM & test?

If no change, exit PM, & rename back (overwriting newly created xulstore.json).

Alas, it makes no difference.

I had a similar problem but the fault was a bad image of the disc on which the system was and the file was missing.

This may have the same effect as creating a new xulstore.json. In the Customize Toolbar window hit the Restore Default Set button at the bottom. You will have to reposition some non-default toolbar icons but it may correct the menu bar location problem. Back up your profile folder beforehand so it will be easier to restore the current status in the event it doesn't work.

Again no effect on the menu bar position.

Then I think your remaining option is to rebuild the profile from scratch, paying special attention to which extension(s) is (are) adversely interacting to create the problem by adding them individually or in small batches and testing by restarting Pale Moon each time. Something similar happened to me three years ago after a PM update caused the Menu Button to display a multi-screen height dropdown list which was ultimately only resolved that way.

In the end, I created a new profile and overwrote its files one by one from the original profile, restarting each time. Tedious, but it went relatively smoothly. However, I did not find out what was wrong; all I can think is that restarting PM after each overwriting allowed it to straighten out something in one of the files that are updated automatically on quit or start.

Glad to hear it worked. I'd back up your user profile (Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Folder > Show Folder button) until you're confident that the fix is stable enough to eliminate the necessity of copying individual files again.
