Back- and Forward buttons (icons) change

Unread post by FlexPM » 2017-04-15, 16:51

Hello!

First of all let me thank you sincerely for providing the Pale Moon - after nearly a decade with the fox, it has become the web browswer of my choice!

Now, lately i switched from Windows to Linux.
As a matter of fact, the unavailability of latest Pale Moon for Win-XP was one main reason to search a suitable linux distro seriously, and at the end, i found debian-based Q4OS (http://q4os.org) with KDE/Trinity desktop as the perfect os for me.

As one of the first App's for sure i went to install PM: got the latest bzipped tarball, extracted it to my new system (32bit btw!! ;) ) and it worked smoothly and flawlessly from the first launch.

But then, from a certain point a really strange 'issue' occured:

Let me just mention that besides PM, i also installed an older version (10) of Firefox (the last verion for win2k i think).
For some reasen i like to run 2 or 3 browsers simultaneously, and amongst those that old FF-version.

And here is why i mentioned that:
At a certain point of time (after the installation of other app's), the icons on the Back- and Forward button change!
And they changed in Firefox-10 as well.

Initially the Back/Forth buttons look like those on this screen:
https://i.imgur.com/vr9yRHO.png

Two closed polygons symbolizing arrows, filled up green when actve, filled grey if not. Nice.

After installing other programs - unfortunately i'm not able to render that more precisely, even after several attempts - both icons change, in PM as well as in FF-10!

Now they look like " <°° " and " °°> " as shown on this picture:
http://www.pro-linux.de/images/NB3/imgd ... n-2550.jpg

(Obviously i'm not the first one having that effect, since that screenshot is not mine!)

Here however is a screeshot i took myself:
https://www.q4os.org/forum/attachment.php?item=214

The outer Frame is ,my' Palemoon, showing the screenshot of another PM which has yet the original icons.: same OS (Q4OS), same PM, same "everything" - but different icons on the back/forth buttons.

Do you agree my appraisal that this is a strange fact?

I mentioned that the same ,change' took place coincidentely in age-old Firefox-10, hence i tend to rate this as an GTK2 related effect.
I found the ,new' icon used on my linux system in:
/usr/share/icons/Adwaita/16x16/actions/go-previous.png and
/usr/share/icons/Adwaita/16x16/actions/go-next.png

My question now is :
Which icons/resources are used in PM for the back and forth button on a linux?

And as an addition: Are there any "alternatives" or "variations" possible in PM itself?

One last amendment: add-ons (and PM-configurations) can be excluded as cause: as the effect occours without any of them installed - and as it appears also in FF as well.

Many thanks in advance for your investigations, hints and ideas,

Happy Easter!

The Linux specialists will have to chime in here, but as far as I know, the Mozilla code on Linux will use a number of system-provided icons which depend directly on what desktop environment you are in/what window or desktop manager you use. If that changes, then so will the icons in the browser UI (OS integration).
I think with Australis, this was changed (because brand unity became more important than O.S. integration for Mozilla at that point)

As mentioned above, on the default theme it will use whatever is provided by the current GTK theme - as such, if that is changed, so too will the browser icons. You can of course change these with the right CSS styling.

If you wish, you can try some of our complete themes, which use their own icon sets:

Many thanks, Moonchild & Lootyhoof for your prompt replies!

Yes, that is what i supposed (and what i would appreciate).
Since i'm rather new to Linux, and the competent and super-helpful guys at Q4OS weren't able to reproduce the behaviour, i decieded to come here to find out, which icon/resourece is actually used (resp. called) for those two buttons.
In my first post i didn' emphasize that all other icons are still the same - which makes it even more trickyer.

I would highly appreciate a hint about which two icons/resources are used, to be able to continue my investigation (in GTK)!

Well, ok, ... to be honest, i didn't follow up what https://www.mozilla.org did since their Firefox 29 :silent:

(If your interested: i stayed with Firefox 27, since 26 they finally supported mp3 in Win-XP: Can you imagine, how often i swor, that Pale Moon forked just two versions earlier, hahaa :? )

Thank you, surely i will have to investigate how that works as a next step (tbh: hopefully i can correct this without getting too much GTK expert...)

Thanks for the hint - Unfortunately i'm rather that kind of person which have this type of 'constraints' to investigate such a behaviour and find the cause for the change (The ,new' back/forth icon's aren't that bad...).

On my system, the icons appear to be derived from those named, appropriately enough, "back" and "forward" under actions.

Ostradamus, you made my day, my week, Thank's man!!

It's indeed that simple - and what's more, confusing:
Once i installed GUFW (the grafical frontend for the firewall UFW,) some Gnome stuff was implicitly loaded (20+ MB in total - that itself should have been a distinct warning for me!) and, amongst that, a gnome icon set with a "back.png" and "forward.png" included.
Now obviously, simple explained, this is what the Runtime-Environment / Moz-based Firefox & Palemoon do: They find those both ,new'' Back' and 'Forward' icons, and start to use them - rather than the 'originals'.
But since that Gnome iconset doesn't provide the other "home", "reload" etc. icons, all other buttons remain unchanged.

Imo a good recipe to achieve a nice mixture of icons, and an excellent way to give me the runaround for 2 weeks :?

I didn't get this earlyer, because there are about a dozend of other .png files (go-back.png, go-previous.png etc.) with the same picture included (located under /usr/share/icons); first, searching for those "back.png" and "forward.png" explicitly finally led me to gnome, an then futher fo GUFW.

I did state above that i'm rather a newbie to Linux, and i had to learn that lesson: installing a Gnome-based App will have a sideeffect to the GUI of my browsers!
It will really take somewhat for me to digest that fact...

And btw: many thanks, Ostradamus! ;)

You're very welcome and I'm glad to hear that helped. Those differently named icons with the same graphics are typically symlinks to one actually .png or .svg file. I'm not sure why installing the GUFW application should have changed your icons in Pale Moon. I would take a look in the index.theme file bundled with your icon theme and see if it inherits the gnome icon theme (that tells the theme to use the gnome theme for any icons that it is missing). That could explain the differences you're seeing. GNU/Linux takes a bit of time to get used to, but hang in there and you'll be an expert before you know it. :)

I'm not sure why installing the GUFW application should have changed your icons in Pale Moon.
Well, simply because when i install GUFW (via Synaptic) it implies the installation of the two packages
- gnome-icon-theme and
- gnome-icon-theme-symbolic
And that gnome icon-theme does indeed contain those back.png and forward.png which you mentioned. Before installing those, there were no such icon-files (back and forward) under /usr/share/icons at all !
But, i'm now trying (with kind support of the guys at q4os.org) to modify my .gtkrc files that way (setting different values for the gtk system variable "gtk-theme-name"), that Pale Moon (and old Fox V.10;) still keep using the ,standerd' icons, even if that gnome-icon-theme is installed.
Maybe, hopefully, experimenting like that will make me an expert before i know it, too :D
Cheers!
