Grrr....

So I used a test profile to see if I could play videos, and yes, I could! So, then I restarted my default profile in Safe Mood. But even in Safe Mode I could not play videos. :(

EDIT: I pressed the pause button, then play again, and I got the video to run in YouTube. In Vimeo, however, toggling the play/pause button did not work.

It seems that I misspoke. In my test profile, with autoplay enabled, I can view videos at YouTube but not at Vimeo.

In my default profile, with autoplay enabled and Flashblocker disabled, it is the same thing; I can play videos at YouTube but not at Vimeo. Likewise, in Safe Mode, I still cannot play Vimeo videos.

Dailymotion is also fine in both profiles.

And to compare, as I said before, I am able to play videos just fine at Vimeo using SeaMonkey.

Good news! Disabling MSE did the trick. Unticking Edit » Preferences » » let me play videos at Vimeo. Does this mean that I am using Flash rather than HTML5 for playback. Or do I even know what I am talking about? :wtf:

Also, if anyone sees something wonky in the output of apt-cache policy in the previous post please let me know.

Well, I guess it's not going to be the libav-tools and ffmpeg that you got out of the PPAs that are going to be the issues, then. Though I know that the ffmpeg from that PPA doesn't exactly match what the upstream Ubuntus have in the official repo, and might cause issues if you try an upgrade in place, but that goes for a whole host of PPA packages.

Off-topic:
Well, I believe you may be right there. I have run into some issues that are off-topic on this thread but maybe we can discuss it another thread that is more general chat? To upgrade to 16.04, I am going to have to reformat the partition that contains the operating system, and install a new operating system. So not quite a clean install as I am not reformatting the whole disk (I am leaving untouched the partition with /home), but not quite the typical upgrade-in-place, because that is actually not going to work now on this device. Actually I wouldn't mind discussing this with you somewhere else as I am not looking forward to this.
And what is in the official repo now?
And should I try the unstable versions of PM to see if it will work with MSE enabled?

packages.ubuntu.com says that 16.04 has the real ffmpeg 2.8.11, 16.10 shipped with 3.0.2 and updated it to 3.0.7 for security reasons, and 17.04 currently has 3.2.4. Libav-tools becomes just a dummy package that uses ffmpeg instead.

I don't know if anyone is running an ffmpeg backports PPA for those releases. I also have a Debian 8 multimedia backports repository on the OBS with ffmpeg 3.2.4 that has resulted in me getting thanks from quite a few people: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show ... evepassert

It should be possible to set up the same kind of repo for Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10, but it would entail a bit of work. I'd look for a PPA first.
