PM 26.2.0 x64 eating up nearly all my cpu! (Linuxmint 17.3)

Post by Enkidu » 2016-04-04, 21:43

Hi,

since I updated to PM 26.1.1 PM is often eating up nearly my whole cpu. ( I dod not install any new addons or plugins!) For a while it is - as normal between 50-100% (Intel Core i7 => 400% is all I have ;) ). Then something happens - I do not what and cpu goes >300% and it is PM.

Has anyone an idea how I can track down this problem?

Tnx in advance,

Since I installed 26.2.0 I thought it is better now. But just a few minutes ago PM again needed nearly all my cpu... :(

I'm using SolydX EE 64bit which is Debian based.

So nothing else is loaded? all you do is start PM and your CPU goes up to 300%?

This happened to me only when in about:config enable.gstreamer was set to true and playing a youtube video, setting it to false and the CPU % goes to 2

Try running PM is safe mode or try a new profile or completely uninstalling PM and trying again.

No. It happens after a while...

That is good hint! Tnx!

media.gstreamer.enabled is true by default. What is the consequence of setting it to false?

You will no longer be able to view H.264 HD video within the browser.

Ok. This is really not acceptable.

Where is the real culprit? Is it PM or gstreamer? Is this a bug or a known issue?

Who can do something to fix it?

(I could accept high cpu while video is played. (But even this is a bug!) But cpu keeps high also after video is finished! So this is definitly not ok.

Could you provide some more specifics as to when the CPU spikes? Is it any/all videos that cause this? YouTube? Other sites?

I think there may be a problem with your computer because i have never in my 40+ years seen a machine do that ever..Just out of curiosity have you attempted the same thing on a different computer.

Weird... It used to happen to me with 26.1.1 when I exited palemoon, window closed correctly and then it would spike to 100% (only one core though), with 26.2.0 doesn't happen.

Do you happen to have the gstreamer1-vaapi package installed? It's been confirmed to cause higher than normal CPU usage.
