H.264/MP4 not working in latest Palemoon in Ubuntu 15.10

Unread post by jeikobu614 » 2016-01-18, 15:25

Hello everyone

My Palemoon keeps crashing if i try to watch some videos in h264/mp4 format. I activated media.gstreamer , installed all needed packages and still nothing. Videos works in other browsers like Firefox, Slimjet, Cyberfox but Palemoon keeps crashing without any error. I test it witch different profiles, safe mode, reinstalled whole browser, installed beta version and the problem still exists and i'm unable to find source of this problem by my self :|

I'm using Ubuntu 15.10 x64.

Could you provide more information (system, distro, links to specific videos causing the crashes, etc.)?

It's Lubuntu 15.10 64-bit version using PM4Linux 25.8.1 . http://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html Only H.264/MP4 not working and crashing, and other websites which uses this format for HTML5 like http://www.cda.pl/video/2280645f or Facebook.

Is media.gstreamer.enabled set to true in about:config? Also, do you have ffmpeg and the ffmepg plugin for gstreamer (gst-ffmpeg??) installed?

This is happening to me as well, I'm using Debian Testing.

If you set media.gstreamer.enabled to False it won't crash but the video won't work either.

I think but not sure if Lubuntu 15.10 64-bit Like Debian testing doesn't support gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg only gstreamer-libav which is version 1.0 not 0.10

gstreamer-libav is the new gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg.

Also it would help if PM supported gstreamer1.0 but they are working on it still.

This might be what's going on with Lubuntu 15.10, go to synaptic and update then search for gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg if it's not there then what I have said might be your issue.

Yes, it's been enabled and I've installed gstreamer0.10 plugins and ffmpeg

There is no gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg for Willy Warewolf but there is for Vivid release (not official from Ubuntu) and I installed package for Vivid but still, videos won't work on Palemoon.

I don't know which gstreamer uses other browsers so maybe it is problem with Lubuntu does not support it :(

I could be a Pale Moon issue as well because PM doesn't support gstreamer1.0 yet and gstreamer-libav is version 1.0

Also when you added gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and other 0.10 files they could be conflicting with gstreamer1.0 files.

From what I can tell PM will not work with gstreamer-libav yet only gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

I added gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg from deb.multimedia.org but in PM there is a conflict with gstreamer1.0 and gstreamer-libav because Debian Testing uses v1.0 and PM will crash when setting media.gstreamer.enabled to True.

But all this will work in Firefox, Iceweasel and naturally in Chromium.

In the future when PM supports gstreamer1.0 it should work as well.

So, there is nothing we can do about it now? We just need to wait? Flash sucks so bad on not too powerful PC, that even videos on 360p will slutter, start to desynchronizing

I've had both gstreamer0.10 and gstreamer1 installed together on Slackware without any issues.
Off-topic:
I can't really wait for slackware 14.2 to come out. hopefully there will be a way to remove pulseaudio.

I think the issue is specific to gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer-libav, if the Distro doesn't support gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg (like in Debian Testing) it doesn't seem to work in PM but it does in other browsers.

This does work in Debian Stable using PaleMoon even though gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is not supported so something is going on with files conflicting each other.

It's not even gstreamer-libav cuz i purge it, and everything is working without it. I think the problem is with some gstreamer1.0 package and gstreamer0.10 conflicting.

My problem is similar. In Linux Mint I used an older version Palemoon. I noticed that I could not set quality youtube more than 360. I updated to 25.8.1 PM problem is not resolved, moreover, now the PM does not show most images on the website.
System is linux mint 17.3 mate. I'm not a linux guru, it seems that the PM about: config media.gstreamer true, gstreamer0.1 is installed. When checking youtube / HTML5 H.264 codec is unavailable.

You need gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg installed and ffmpeg.
