FossaMail icons

Post by context » 2015-08-23, 00:17

Unlike many users, I tend to run the default themes on most software. But as a new user of FossaMail, I find the default icons to be a bit "heavy" and would like to replace them with lighter versions.

So I ask: how are the default icons specified? Is there an associated FossaMail theme? I haven't been able to locate a reference on the forums.

While I'm at it: is it true that the help file for FossaMail is Mozilla's help site?

Thanks for any assistance.

Unsure where the icon resources are stored myself. Though if you wanted an easy means of changing the majority of them, try Classic Toolbar Icons (may have to use an older version). You can tweak quite a bit with it. Just be noted that the icons by default have bordering around them. You can disable, but it will be a bit smaller.

Thanks for your response. But I'm afraid I don't follow what you're suggesting ... so I'll go back to my main request:
how are the default icons specified?
If I can gain an understanding of the source of the icons, then the various options will probably make sense.

Hopefully, someone can chime in with some code-level insights.

Ryan suggests this
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... src=search
extension, before trying to mess with the theme stuff yourself, it could be worth a try. I don't know it, so I can't tell how those icons look. It changes just the icons, so the theme will stay default.

FossaMail = Thunderbird based on Pale Moon. They are pretty much the same.

Yeah, using the extension aforementioned can change quite a lot without the need to edit theme itself. If color scheme bothers you, could look into some Personas.Which kind of brings me somewhere else on that note. Exactly where are the Thunderbird/Fossa, or PM default themes even stored locally? Always confused me.
Unrelated here, but SeaMonkey is actually an interesting one with icons I've found. Not necessarily theme resources, but exe icon resources themselves. All stored within a chrome directory under installed location.

Well Fossa and TB are almost the same. Pretty sure menu bar placement on Mozilla's side is now located beneath the tabs bar. Tabs are also hidden with no messages opened. GUI and some build related specifics are kinda varied. Personally still use TB 3.1.18 sometimes. Javascript and links totally disabled, of course. Haven't been using mail clients in a while. Good to be back tbh

On the TB side nothing much has changed for ages, I have TB 38 here and there is not much difference to Fossa Mail. Only great new thing are the send filters that got finally implemented after 10 years or so.

Pretty sure Mozilla stated that features will no longer be implemented. Kind of an ESR-like thing. There's a non free fork called Postbox, and it's under constant development. Never tried it myself. Perhaps in time. You're right though. TB and Fossmail are not very different at all. But the GUI does have some notable variations, following build specifics. I personally use Thunderbird 3.1.18. Fav client atm.

Thanks for the responses. But I have one question about implementing the suggested theme:

Can it be applied only to FossaMail?

I could not determine that ... and there was no mention in user comments. After two years of use, Pale Moon is exactly how I want it to be. I wouldn't want to change anything ... and certainly not have surprises crop up.

If by that you mean FossaMail and PM sharing settings, or theming adjusted, than no. Different programs, different profiles. No worries ;)
PS. You could always start a new profile in Pale Moon too if you wanted.

I gave the theme a try and found that
1) it did affect FossaMail and not Pale Moon; however,
2) it did not affect the style icons on the create new mail screen, which are the main ones I wanted to improve.

I'll try a resource editor, next, to see if the create icons are embedded graphics. That now seems likely. I'll post my results.
