Strange Things Since Latest Update
Strange Things Since Latest Update
Morning...
I am running the latest version of FM, and am having issues with how FM looks and performs...I don't know how else to describe it, below...
Here is what's happening since the last update:
1. I use an older version of AdBlock Plus, the icon has always been in the lower right hand corner of the status bar along with Today's pane, the total and unread counts.
Since the update, it's a crap shoot if any of them show up anymore - the ABP icon has been moved the the left hand side of the status bar, the other icons just aren't there.
2. I am religious about keeping my inbox organized and very small, and I do get an awful lot of mail from 2 Gmail accounts everyday, some are moved to different folders, many are discarded so I end up with a rather large trash folder by the end of the day.
3. I compact religiously, as well, at the close of every business day as the norm, sometimes more.
Since the update, (the ABP icon having been moved and the other icons gone) when I try to compact, there is no status, as has always been the case - it doesn't show any compact activity, nothing, I have to assume there is no compacting being done.
I have to close out FM, reopen, about 50% of the time it'll go back to normal, about 50% of the time, nothing, I have to continue this process until it opens in a "normal" state.
When I reboot every morning, FM opens in the new state, have to start exiting and reopening until I get back to the normal state.
I tried reverting to an older version - I tried all of the 25.2.x versions - nothing, they all perform the same way now.
Any idea what's causing this? Can you please help with this issue?
Thank you, in advance...
Regards.

Re: Strange Things Since Latest Update
I rarely have the correct status bar display due to ABP. See this post I made in another thread. It's just something we'll have to live with for now.
I've actually tweaked the code from my post in that other thread as some links were showing behind the page text. This is what I'm currently using in "FossaMail profile" -> 'chrome' -> 'userContent.css' to show links in a tool tip.

Code: Select all
/* show url when hovering over link */
a[href]:hover {
text-decoration: none !important;
}
a[href]:hover:after, a[href]:focus:after {
display: block;
position: fixed; left: 4px; bottom: 4px;
z-index: 1;
border-radius: 10px;
content: attr(href);
padding: 1px 10px;
font-size: 15px !important;
font-family: sans-serif !important;
text-align: left !important;
text-shadow: 1px 1px 1px #000;
line-height: 25px;
/* text inside "opacity" inherits transparency */
/* background-color: rgb(118,100,77); opacity: 0.7; !important; */
/* children do not inherit transparency when opacity specified this way */
background-color: rgba(118,100,77,0.9) !important;
color: rgb(249,244,233) !important;
}

I also wonder why you guys need a adblocker in FossaMail, because their is no need for that.

I was wondering the exact same thingdark_moon wrote:I also wonder why you guys need a adblocker in FossaMail, because their is no need for that.
What exactly do you hope to achieve with the adblocker? It's not like FossaMail allows remote content in mails by default, and even when it does, there is no javascript. And it won't prevent spam mail from arriving.

Pixel tracking doesn't require JS: http://dyn.com/blog/tracking-email-open ... analytics/ and https://segment.com/docs/sources/website/pixel/
Re: Strange Things Since Latest Update
I do get some ads, even as static from a good site I love to venture, some of the ads throw some random images that I don't find pleasant. If it looks like a link to the e-mail but it's an ad, misleading.

RSS feeds. If the web page isn't enabled I don't see the embedded video. With that comes ads and tracking.
One site even opens a "blank" browser tab in Palemoon due to facebook or twitter. I forget which but there was a tracking pixel or somesuch in that "blank" page. Very annoying without an adblocker.

Then just don't allow HTML for emails.
No tracking, ad etc. possible.
I can recommend the "Simple HT Jumper" addon for temporary allow HTML for emails.

Didn't you understand what I said about not loading remote content?eskaton023 wrote:Pixel tracking doesn't require JS: http://dyn.com/blog/tracking-email-open ... analytics/ and https://segment.com/docs/sources/website/pixel/

Re: Strange Things Since Latest Update
Sigh, yes, but emails from Newegg, Tigerdirect, Carparts.com, ECS Tuning, Pelican Parts, eBay, and many others all come with images that make up the entirety of the body. Stripping it to plain text or not loading remote content renders it nigh useless. That suggestion is as helpful as telling someone to use Lynx or or w3m to avoid malicious content on the internet.
Here is this morning's email from Newegg with no remote content:
And here is the email as plain text (I've removed my adress and snipped specific URLs so as to be non-functional):
Just the same as wanting to visit their site and not load all ads, scripts, tracking etc, some users prefer the same with the email from said vendor/owner.
Also, as someone else pointed out, using FM as an RSS reader is another use case. It's very likely users will load the 'full' page in FM, and while JS may still be unavailable there, that's a larger vector than just email alone I'd think.
