Address book copy and merge

Post by klutzone » 2015-11-16, 17:46

On laptop, I exported to *.csv. On desktop, import made new book names, did not allow merge.
So I manually merged files to make G:\Collected Addresses.csv and G:\Personal Address Book.csv.
After importing these, I also had the prior books under same names, which I could not delete inside program.
Is there an external file I could edit out those duplicate names?
Move and merge address books should be easy.

Here are three ways to do that. I would suggest you do a copy of your address book beforehand, just to make sure (either copy your entire profile, or just the file "abook.mab")

Using a spreadsheet program: Excel or LibreOffice Calk
Since you seem to have all these addresses in two CSV files, copy them in the same Excel or LibreOffice Calc file, sort by last name, first name. Then manually remove all the duplicates. Then remove all contacts from your address book and import the new file.

Two other solutions use extensions that work (or worked) with Thunderbird.

Duplicate Contact Manager
I used it back under Thunderbird 17 or so, and at the time, it worked flawlessly.
How to use.
– Import contacts from both files and copy them into the same, default address book.
– Run the extension.
If my memory is right, questions aren't asked when information on both versions of the contact is the same.

Addressbooks Synchronizer
Description vs comments don't say the same thing, so I am not sure if it integrate two files and eliminates duplicates. No experience with this extension.
