Pale Moon not playing any video on youtube

Unread post by schelling » 2011-09-14, 22:40

Guys,

I hope you can help me out here. Since today I have been having a strange issue when browsing youtube with Palemoon, never had a problem before.
Every single video I click gives the message " An error occured. Please try later"

This is what I have done to try to solve this issue;
-checked same video's on other browsers (firefox and IE). Both other browsers seem to have zero issues with any of the video's on youtube.
-updated flash plugin to latest version -> no result
-updated all the plugins to latest version -> no result
-update Pale moon browser to latest version (6.0.2) -> no result
-disabled all scripts from Greasemonkey (read a reference on the webs that this might be causing an issue) -> no result
-checked other video sites with flash videos -> no problem, videos play fine

Any idea what I can do to solve this issue?

OS win xp, 32

Usually videos not playing are the result of a software firewall blocking the plugin container.
You will have to give the plugin container (plugin-container.exe) access to the internet for both inbound and outbound traffic, so any plugins (like flash for Youtube) can send the needed requests to servers (outbound connection) and can receive streamed data (inbound packets).

Will try that but I fail to see how that explains the follwing facts

- other videowebsites play without problem in pale moon
- Firefox works fine on youtube (and Firefox also uses plugin-container)

I don't understand how this proces being blocked would
a) only cause problem with youtube
b) only cause problem with pale moon on youtube

a) Other video web sites may not use the same type of streaming (even if they would use flash for it), or not even use a plugin at all (e.g. if they use HTML5 video if support for it is found in the browser) in which case it won't be an issue.
b) Many firewalls are biased for "known programs" and have preset internal rules for this kind of thing to prevent support questions :)

OK,

Well had a look through avast (free version) and added plugin-container.exe to 'safe' processes.
Nothing changed.

Guess it's just my problem then. Not a big youtube fan anyway :)

Avast is also not your firewall :) It's an antivirus program.
Although it's probably a good thing to add it to safe processes there as well, you should look at firewall rules you have on your system.
If you are using Windows' built-in firewall, check Control panel -> Windows Firewall -> tab "Exceptions". If the plugin container is already listed there, click "Edit..." and then "change scope", adjust accordingly to allow full access.

If you are using a third-party software firewall, please check the documentation of that program to create an exception rule.

Well, if you are somehow security concerned or even paranoid you might not want to create a rule for plugin-container but might allow it if you are on a side you trust that requires it (quite rare). I would recommend using COMODO IS (Antivirus manual only, just FW an Defense+ is rly good) as a good firewall (the only `non-real-professional-, or lets say in general: personal firewall` passing any leak test) btw.
