Scribd is scrambled?

Post by aNoid » 2012-03-02, 04:58

When I view scribd in Palemoon the documents are scrambled. That's the best way i can think to explain it. When I Dl the documents or view the page in another browser they display properly. I wonder if this is a know issue, or if it has been seen by anyone else?

Looks fine to me - can you give me a link to a specific problematic document on scribd?
What language was the original document in?

The original document is in English. Or at least that's the language that it renders in when it has been dl'ed or when it displays in another browser.

I looked at 2 documents yesterday, one I screencaped above, the other was a random selection. Both gave me scramble text.
Here's a link to the one I screencapped http://www.scribd.com/doc/81979718/Drif ... ow-Excerpt

Yet, I viewed another random selection from the scridb homepage today, after reading your reply, and it rendered properly O_o

Is it a maybe a matter of Direct linking to a document, vs the linking in from the homepage? That is the only difference I have done to get a page to render properly with the scribd reader thingy that is used.

I checked the link (direct) you gave in your reply, and it renders correctly in the browser.

This seems to be their way of trying to prevent people from copying the books' content or embedding it in other pages - I haven't looked in detail at the way their pages work but if you try to copy text from that document and paste it in notepad, it's scrambled in the same way you saw it. I gather they are using some font remapping to have it display correctly on the screen but having the raw text be scrambled (using a translation table). Simple yet effective.

For some reason (perhaps because of a blocked script or improperly loaded css or similar) it seemed to have not worked on your particular setup.

I appreciate the detective work on your end Moonchild.

It's time to grab my Sheerluck pipe and take a gander at the old time saving extension known as 'No-Script' to see just what's not happening when I view Scribd documents. :ugeek:

Between that or one of the Ad Block filters I can definitely guarantee that there are scripts and/or CSS' that are not loading or being executed properly.
