Plug-in container issues- pls help
XP SP3 32-bit
PM 9-1
Sometimes (don't know why) plug-in container process takes 2 or 3 times as much memory as PM & slows my system to a crawl.
I terminate the process with PM still running. Most websites continue to function properly.
Except in certain cases: vimeo imbedded videos don't play; aweber won't come up at all; etc., etc.
Why do I need the plug-in container anyway & is there a work-around?
thanks in advance. John

Re: Plug-in container issues- pls help
The plugin container is (as the name suggests) a container process for plugins. It means that content in webpages that use a plugin to display media (like embedded video, flash, etc.) will have this process launched to host the plugin. If the plugin container uses a lot of memory, it is because the plugin you use eats up so much memory (i.e.: this is a plugin issue, not a Pale Moon issue).
Terminating the process will kill the plugin it was hosting, and embedded media or apps using the plugin will stop working.
As such, there is no workaround, apart from not using memory-hungry plugins... I'm afraid there isn't much else you can do about it.

thank you for responding! much appreciated!
And, I'm only using the plugins that came with PM.
Do they cause this problem?

Re: Plug-in container issues- pls help
There are no plugins supplied with any recent version of Pale Moon.
The plugins referred to, Flash, Silverlight, Java, VLC Media player (< causing recent crashes), Quicktime, Shockwave, etc., are all installed separately into Windows - by the user. All of these can be disabled, if a website requires its' use, enable the necessary plugin and refresh the original page. When finished, you can then disable the plugin once more.

Thank you for your help!
The only plugins that I have in PM or Windows are flash, silverlight, win media player.
I specifically do not have installed at all are Java, VLC, Quicktime, shockwave or any other plugin(s).
The only 2 situations I have encountered so far that do not work with plugin-container disabled are the aweber website and vimeo imbedded videos. So far, everything else works ok.
the message that I get when I try to access the aweber website is: "blocked", with no indication of what is causing the blocking. I do Not have adblock(plus) or any other blocking software installed. HOSTS file Disabled. cookies Enabled.
the vimeo videos just do not respond at all- one site which I tried was moyers & co.
I very much appreciate any further thoughts you have because I'd prefer to not use the plug-in container.
My most recent memory stats: PM 574k, plugin-cont 187k
thanks again, John
My friends and I are really grateful to you for all your hard work and support!

Can you try creating a new profile to test from?
Hold down the left Shift while you click the Pale Moon icon to start it, you'll see a window, choose Create new profile, name it then select it. Start it and test your sites.

What version of Adobe Flash Player is being used?johnb wrote:yes
What graphics hardware and driver is being used?
There is no one latest version of Adobe Flash Player for Firefox. At this time, there are two latest version:
Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.15
Adobe Flash Player 11.1.102.62
I note that the installer for Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.15 fails to installs under normal circumstances on Windows 2000 (I have not tested the 11.1 series version). If the Adobe Flash installer is to be used to install Adobe Flash Player on Windows 2000, I recommend using the Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.11 version.
I am thinking that there may be a driver or hardware issue.
Unless you have a significant use for Stage 3D hardware accelerated rendering from the Flash Player and such rendering is supported correctly by the graphics hardware and driver(s), I recommend using the the Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.15 or Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.11.

ascii: can you please keep things on-topic? the issue is about XP SP3. Thanks.
Also, the latest version of Flash Player is 11.1, 10.3 is not the latest.

Re: Plug-in container issues- pls help
Hi & thanks for your help & support!
I doubled checked & I have the latest versions of flash & silverlight.
I tried the holding the left shift while starting PM several times.
The only thing that kept coming up was the "safe mode" little window- no profile option.
The plug-in container memory problem kept getting worse. On my final trial, it was using more memory than PM.
I think that the problem may be associated with the latest version of flash.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks again, John
PS I'm going to try a run with all plugins (I'm only using flash, silverlight, windows media player) disabled except flash and see what that does. J.

Re: Plug-in container issues- pls help
Though, it might not have been precisely relevant, I attempted to provide assistance to diagnose the "plug-in container process takes 2 or 3 times as much memory as PM & slows my system to a crawl" problem.
The "slow[ing of] [thread starter's] system to a crawl" could be due to system resources limitations (like amount of memory) or software design/defect. I attempted to provide information to attempt to rule out or confirm the second case (making note that the recent Adobe Flash Players use hardware acceleration), as it seemed more efficient to do so (the cases are not mutually exclusive).
This attempt shall now be abandoned to target the ultimate issue.
Wherefore, from reading the initial post to this thread, the issue seems to be: reasons why a plug-in is needed by the thread starter and to identify possible workarounds to such need. The issue has a logical defect; it assumes an idea that may be false (that thread starter "needs: the plug-in container).
I do not understand how the issue is about Windows XP with Service Pack 3.
This is similar to how Mozilla provides updates to multiple version series (most recent version series and 3.6 version series) and releasing often those updates at the same time.

Very well, I shall try to focus the thread on the issue.Moonchild wrote:ascii: can you please keep things on-topic? the issue is about XP SP3. Thanks.

I made the latest versions claim based on the information from Adobe from the Adobe Flash Player archive page (which provides release dates now). The latest version (as in the most recent) from that page is no single version because there are multiple versions with the most recent release date (the versions have the same release date). The Adobe Flash Player archive page may be found: http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14266 .Moonchild wrote:Also, the latest version of Flash Player is 11.1, 10.3 is not the latest.

Re: Plug-in container issues- pls help
@ascii_elite-
thank you for your attempt at assistance.
I ask that for me the focus stays on PM 9-1p, XP SP3, the plug-in container for PM version 9-1, and the memory usage problem associated with that version.
thanks for your understanding. John

@Moonchild
@cymroly
I Thank you again for your help & support!
And, my humblest apologies. I am sorry to have given incomplete info.
I hope you will forgive this dumbass and continue support.
I see that in my original post in this topic I failed to say: PM 9-1 portable 32 bit.
