Excessive memory usage with palemoon 8.0

Dear Community,

The palemoon browser on my system always used a lot of memmory, but since version 8.0 this behavior goes beyond every limit.

Palemoon restarted two times between taking these images. That is because the browser gets very slow and unresponding.

I have searched the internet many times for this, but no matter what I try, the problem just gets worse.

You guys know Palemoon better then anyone. Does anyone of you know what I can try to get palemoon more responsive and to use less memory?

My system specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 3.2 Ghz
AMD Radeon 5770, 11.11 driverset
MSI 870A-G54 mobo.

Memory usage going out of bounds like this is usually caused by incompatible add-ons and toolbars that are forced to work with a later version of the browser.

Does this happen too if you start Pale Moon in safe mode? (hold down SHIFT when you start the browser)

Can you please list the add-ons you are using and can you check if there are any that were not designed for use with Pale Moon 8?

Can you also list what is displayed when you type "about:memory" in the address bar and press enter, please?

You can try the "Memory Fox" add-on, but you must be running a lot of things to get a huge overload. I run over 100 tabs and they don't go beyond 400MB, maybe like 40% stressing on the CPU. If it's Flash, it's slightly obvious, though.

I advise against memoryfox - it won't help with a working set growing out of control and it only flushes things to the page file anyway.

about:memory would only help me if called up when it uses an excessive amount of memory at the time like you initially reported

500MB isn't too terribly odd if you have a bunch of tabs with complex pages open, especially if you have lots of free ram to spare.

As for your add-ons list: you could have gone to help -> troubleshooting information, that lists all the add-ons you have as well (in addition to changed configuration parameters). No need to install an add-on for that.
What does "page speed" have for function, exactly? it seems to use some custom C code etc.
Also not familiar with tab counter.

I agree. MemoryFox lags when I watch flash videos, it's my HW that limits it at most. (So, I don't use it, just suggesting he tries it.)

I meant to say that without MemoryFox, I normally don't go higher than 400MBs, and around 40% CPU, "plugin container" can hog up more RAM and CPU because of Flash usually.
Weird, that I use SmartRAM from Iobit's Advanced System Care and it lessens my lag most of the time, although it's clearing RAM by allocating to the PF.

But ok, as soon as Palemoon gets to over 3 gb memory usage again, I will post the about:memory list here.

And the addons you ask for;
Pagespeed is an addon by google, that analyses the page speed of your webpage. I can see what elements on my sites are causing problems while loading the page. See: http://code.google.com/speed/page-speed ... refox.html

As for tab counter, it only displays the amount of tabs I have opened at this time. I use it for checking if an high amount of tabs has effect on the memory usage.

Looks like you have a large chunk used up by js. In particular your localhost:4040 seems to be using out of bounds amounts of memory. What the hell are you running on your localhost?

One thing you can try is to throttle back methodjit to cut down on js memory use. It can get fairly hungry on occasion.
To do this:

set javascript.options.methodjit_always to false
set javascript.options.methodjit.chrome to false
set javascript.options.jitprofiling.* to false

You may also want to put a harder limit on the max memory used by js:
set javascript.options.mem.max to an appropriate value in kb (e.g. 100000 for 100MB)

Please also check if running a garbage collection on that screen (buttons at the bottom) help reduce memory. If so, you might want to try setting:
javascript.options.mem.gc_per_compartment to false to pool all the gc heap together which would help manage it if splintered otherwise.
Increasing the gc frequency may also help if you have a lot of js-heavy pages that reload frequently:
set javascript.options.mem.gc_frequency to 15 or so (time in seconds, default 300)

Completely exit the browser and restart it.

Another tip: if you don't actively use all of your tabs in a session, you can further reduce memory load by not loading them until selected.
Tools -> Options -> General, check "Don't load tabs until selected"

Thx for your reply

When I woke up this morning, palemoon uses about 3,1 gb of memory. At the bottom of this post, you can see that a large part of this is indeed js and localhost:4040.

What I'm running there is my subsonic media streamer (see http://www.subsonic.org). If I set 'Don't load tabs until selected' would Subsonic then go to the next song if it completes one? I'm going to test that today.

As for your other tips, I'm going to test that out right now

I'll let you know about the results.

Those two combined account for almost 2GB of your usage. Additional overhead for allocating this is probably also used in the system principal.

Considering the source of this, you will probably run into the same problem using an official Mozilla build of Firefox - could you do me a favor and check that? and if so, file a report in Bugzilla?
There's little I can do about this, I'm afraid, apart from battling symptoms, which the memory settings I indicated may help with. If it's not present in Mozilla Firefox (I doubt it, it's rather specific to internal js routines, looks like, which I haven't touched), then something else may be going on and I can see if I can pinpoint the issue.

It is? Some selections of the dropdown above it will grey it out (but I assumed you would have set it to "show windows and tabs from last time")

It is? Some selections of the dropdown above it will grey it out (but I assumed you would have set it to "show windows and tabs from last time")

Ah I see, I've set that option to 'Show my homepage'. I've got the session manager plugin for recovering sessions if I want to. Standard option is to load my 4 homepages.

But okay, I've installed the latest Firefox build from Mozilla. I've set the same startpages, extensions, plugins and bookmarks as in my palemoon browser.

I've also copiëd an old session file to the firefox profile folder (37 tabs) and loaded it within Firefox. In that session are all the tabs I frequently use including my localhost applications.

I'll let Firefox run for a day or so to see what the memory usage does. If it goes beyond 1,5gb I'll let you know and I'll also fill in a bug report.

Okay, Firefox is currently using 1.8 gb of memory while palemoon uses 1.585 gb. See: http://piclair.com/data/leb1n.jpg

Just for the hell of it I checked the "demo" page of the music streamer which is a live version of a selection of free music on their site on a new profile without add-ons, and there is NO excessive memory usage - it may not be a core browser issue. Can you check if this happens as well on a fresh profile without add-ons for you? if not, it's one of your add-ons causing this problem.

Thx for the suggestion Moonchild.

I'll start VMware now, and test it from within a virtual machine. There I got fresh installs of both the browsers and the operating system.

Edit: Oh, just for the record: Today I had my fresh firefox install running all day with only 1 tab open: subsonic. After 7 hours it used about 900 mb of memory...

hmm okay, then I may simply have not let it run long enough -or- not using the actual subsonic software but having the on-line demo page open instead makes a difference. Thanks for verifying!
