Youtube hang

Post by Ron_S » 2026-07-03, 21:23

Win10:
34.3.1:
64-bit browser:
Youtube:

Hello all.
I have an oddball problem with Youtube hanging for 6-7 seconds, which from searching here it seems some others have/had a similar thing while others don't, however...
The strangest thing here is that my wifes PC has no such hang and takes less than 2 seconds to load the same thing.
The 2 Laptops are similar -
Wifes with no hang - ASUS TUF Ryzen 5800H 32gb ram, Nvidia 3060.
Mine with hang - ASUS TUF Ryzen 8000H 32gb ram, Nvidia 4070.
Running the same OS.

Now you'd expect mine to be a little quicker, and it is with most things, except this strange hang.
I've used a clean profile and tried many other things, but nothing changes it.
Naturally I've also gone along and compared settings between machines and changed even small things which were different.
There's no abnormal CPU or GPU utilisation during this hang either.

The only other differences that I've noticed are that mine has less 'MS visual C++' things installed and a later version of 'MS Desktop Runtime', I have no idea whether that has an effect or not.

Any ideas?

Looks like you are using Native user-agent mode. YouTube my present you with slow fallback code in that case. You can try setting it to Firefox Compatibility, instead, and see if that works any better.

Thanks, but no dice with any other compatibility mode either.
The wifes machine also uses native.
I actually normally have a lot more useragent.overrides set too (because I like to use native in the general settings), but I'd only just redid a profile to see if that changed things. It didn't.

This has me totally stumped, 2 essentially very similar machines with quite different behavior.

Are you using the same screen resolution and the same bit depth?

Youtube is really a beast of its own kind, with lots of issues. Not only is it coded solely for chrome (not even chromium) but they also constantly tinker with the site itself, as well as doing A/B testing (different users getting a "different site" with different code). Currently, since I was forcibly logged out, I can no longer view comments or load more infinite scrolling side-feed recommendations or video channel entries beyond initial load, nor provide feedback. All of which I could be before I logged back in. It might be corrupted cookies, since I've tried everything else.

Have you tried deleting cache and cookies? Logging in and out? Tested logged out. Used a firefox or chromium browser to see if it's a your-computer-thing or a browser-thing, or an account thing (logging in on your wife's computer?).

But yeah, "experiencing interruptions", "blinking timer", 30-seconds-in-error, or slow buffering is sadly something that just happens from time to time.

Otherwise I'm surprised how well it actually runs on Pale Moon for me (using eMatrix, uBO, and PureURL, and GreasMonkey scripts to fix the site and de-bloat it).

Yes.
Tried logged in and out on both machines, same behavior.
Waterfox works fine on both machines.

I should point out that the wifes machine is 10 LTSC 1809 and mine is 10 Pro 22H2 (custom lite build) but was also LTSC (latest 21H2 maybe?) until recently (and had same problem). Will likely go back to LTSC though as I think it's still better than the custom build, although I'd really like to switch to Linux, but that's another story...

I really hope this isn't something really stupid that I've done along the way and is bleedingly obvious and I'm looking to deep.

Edit - Both machines also have Shutup10 and WUB to reduce telemetry, spying, updates, and many other nasties...
