Reddit & some other websites not working

Post by ADHD201 » 2026-06-26, 15:16

Windows 10:
34.3.1:
64-bit:
https://www.reddit.com/:
Browser theme (if not default):
UBlock Origin:
Installed plugins: (about:plugins):

recently, I realized that the drop down menu on reddit does not work on pale moon, as well as the list of subreddits you're often able to see to the side. I tested this on another browser to be sure, and it seems the actual website is working just fine. I've had a few other compatibility issues, and I was really hoping someone might have some fixes for me, because I haven't been able to find any myself.

I don't use reddit other than to occasionally read a thread there, so I'm no expert. But I have seen some other Pale Moon users here talk about that they prefer to use it via the old.reddit.com frontend. You should search the forum for other reddit topics, you may find some useful tips in them.

Use old.reddit. I do, and I'm on there quite often. That said, chat won't work. For polls you have to change to sh.reddit.

Reddit is fully involved with google and only google chrome/ium works Perfectly on it.

You'll also want a old.reddit.com login form redirection fix user script to have a working login form on as it normally redirects to "normal" page for login (you need a user script manager like Greasemonkey for UXP to use user scripts).

Old Reddit doesn't seem to support certain image posts that are displayed with link to the image page rather than image embedded on the page. If anyone has a solution for that...?

For the Redirector extension, I use the redirect set recommended by Why_You_Always_Lying and nothing else. I am not registered.

Right, I used at least two scripts in the past for that (not at the same time, I mean). Given the exceptions in that redirection rule, some parts can't really be avoided other than by going to the new version, huh?

Yes, that’s how it looks. It’s almost a miracle that they are still largely supplying the old design.

Has anyone used this successfully? I tried it, but I'm not sure if I'd forgotten my login or it just didn't work. I kept getting a 403 error..

I just created a new account, but would be good to know.

Maybe the endpoint actually only works for old accounts? The script just makes the form that makes POST request to old.reddit.com/post/login. The new endpoint is at www.reddit.com/svc/shreddit/account/login and accepts data differently than the old one.

Reddit will require you to log in to use old.reddit.com

Reddit will start requiring people to be logged into Reddit to use old.reddit.com.

The new requirement will take effect “over the next month,” a Reddit employee going by the username boat-botany announced on the social media platform today. The person claimed that the change is part of an ongoing effort to “tighten how automated systems access Reddit.” ...

probably because old.reddit.com is the default target for scrapers/AI/bots because it's easier to parse the output.

I noticed when accessing old.reddit.com with Chromium, it sometimes shows the blocked page and something about anti-bot measures and suggests to login. I don't remember seeing it with Pale Moon...or if I did, I forgot...

BTW, if I remember the timeline right, I think about a year ago, I tried opening old.reddit.com with Firefox 4. The site seemed perfectly readable. Didn't try to login, though.

If everything was so compatible... One can dream. You guys could take a good long break from PM development. ;)

I tried logging in today via that form provided by the user script aaaand...looks like the endpoint is gone. New form doesn't load at all in Pale Moon...so that's it I guess.

I created an account with that login script, when I was not able to log in to my old one through that same script. So that might be possible. Also, I'm still logged in now, and have not been forcibly logged out, so maybe some cookie thing from a Firefox login like TelluWhite's CF thing could work? Perhaps, maybe..?

It's a sad state anyhow, and I read that reddit is using React, as is steam.. React seem to be the most non-chromium hostile site framework out there.
