Images on some website started to render badly recently
This seems to be a rather recent thing but I don't remember what PM version I started to notice it on, unfortunately.
Or maybe, just to make sure, does the photo on this page https://bikerumor.com/you-could-win-a-o ... -campaign/ render correctly for anyone?
I see a black-orange mess.

Fine for me too PM 34.3.0.1 under Linux

All the images on that page look fine to me as well. Are you using any kind of content filtering extensions like uBlock or eMatrix? You might want to check your preferences and filtering rules if you are running those.Octopuss wrote: ↑2026-06-18, 14:28This seems to be a rather recent thing but I don't remember what PM version I started to notice it on, unfortunately.

A picture might show us what you are looking at. A "black-orange mess" could be anything.

Ok I assumed it was a bug in PM.
I have no idea WTF is going on then
It renders like this even with Ublock disabled.

With uBlock enabled it renders just fine for me. Did you try it in a fresh profile?

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
That looks like a colour calibration issue.
See if setting gfx.color_management.mode to 0 (restart may be required? I don't remember) helps. If it does, then you need to calibrate colour for your monitor. Just disabling in-browser colour management is usually the easiest.

Stupid Windows 11 apparently deletes the colour profile when you update graphic card drivers. I have to pull out the calibration device again I guess. Good I found out considering I work with photos in hobbyist capacity.
Also, thank you a lot. This possibility didn't cross my mind.

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
Sorry to hear you running into yet another headache with Windows 11.
I know what a pain it can be to accurately calibrate your monitor. Not sure how easy it is to make a backup of your colour profile in Win 11 but it should be possible (hopefully saving you time next time it happens).
I guess Pale Moon gave you an early warning here

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
This is super weird. I have recalibrated my monitor and made sure an ICC profile is active again but some images on some website (I don't even understand how is this possible, logic commands all or none) still look like this.
So anyway, PM is one of those "colour aware" or whatever the term is programs that actually make use of ICC profiles? Judging by the recommendations to flip a setting in about:config, I guess the answer is yes? I don't want to do that (if possible) since I like photos rendered with correct colours (of course anything is better than what I see right now but I guess you understand my point).
edit: yeah flipping the gfx.color_management.mode to 0 fixed it, but why the hell does it work fine in Waterfox with the default value (2; no idea what "Color management applied only to tagged image." means)

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
It also gets weirder here: https://www.color.org/version4html.xalter
WTF?
It's not any of the possible results, lol.
This is with the default value of 2. Since I can see most photos on most websites rendered correctly, I was curious what else could I find.
I don't know, could this be some sort of an obscure bug in PM's rendering engine maybe?
If I change the setting to 0, I see the expected bottom picture as if ICC was not available at all.

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
I've never seen that kind of result either -- I'm not sure what's going on there.
It does suggest there's a problem with v4 profiles on your system.. I believe v4 profiles are still disabled by default in Firefox and its derivatives.
For the record here's my own result in that page.

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
This is how it renders in the current Waterfox (I bet that's as Firefox as it gets) with gfx.color_management.mode set to 2:
I am perplexed.
I guess I'll try a test new profile.
It's also weird I've only ever seen it on TWO photos thus far.
edit: Do you use any custom ICC profile or you're using what's in Windows by default?

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
It renders correctly when I reset all colour settings to defaults, and the moment I apply the profile created by Calibrite and restart Windows the offending website displays that particular photo in broken colours.
This is not troubleshootable at all, this could be caused by numerous things. Agh. BUT I believe it worked correctly in Windows 10.

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
Those are just examples of possible miss-configurations, not an exhaustive list.
It would seem you're having trouble with these two color spaces:
v4 e-sRGB
v4 YCC-RGB
That certainly would explain why Pale Moon is behaving differently here, applying newer tech and exposing bugs in certain systems that Firefox et al are hiding.

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
I guess Moonchild would have to dive deep into the PM's code in order to find any possible answers, but how many people care about colour calibration and how stuff renders in a browser? I'm not holding my breath, man hours are better spent elsewhere. That doesn't mean I am not curious what the heck is going on here though.
P.S. When I'm calibrating my monitor, I explicitly select ICC v2 in Calibrite because the software literally warns you that despite v4 not being anything new and seems supported, it's a potential compatibility problem.

Re: Images on some website started to render badly recently
I redid the entire calibration, resetting settings and whatnot, and now the offending photos render correctly. I THINK the Calibrite software might have sneaked in v4 ICC instead of the default v2, but I will never know I guess.
Side question:
When I open the Settings and click on start menu or anything that takes the Settings windows out of focus, it completely changes colour temperature from reddish to something noticeably cooler. Is this normal? Does that happen for others too?
The temperature looks exactly as if the ICC profile was not applied and the default builtin sRGB one was being used instead (when in focus), so it looks kinda suspicious to me.

Off-topic:
I get that behaviour when clicking the battery-brightness-volume taskbar-"button" on Win11, it temporarily disables the changes from f.lux (and I think does the same with the built-in night mode?), so maybe its triggering something similar for you?
