No, the video uses the image as a "poster" (still image placeholder when the video isn't playing) in that attribute of it.
Then it actually gives the source of the video to play in the <source> tag within the <video> tag.
The "on the fly" transcoding on the server side to webp is something some platforms do. the server-side is a jpg, but you are being served a webp with the appropriate content-type server header.
Pretty much all of that is done server-side, not your front-end side.

The test site doesn't play anything, PM and FX complain about constructor not being invoked with new (Firefox 148 is already obsolete?). On X, both PM and FX complain about being unable decode the video, the only difference is one refers to it as application/x-mpegurl, the other as application/vnd.apple.mpegurl.

Edit: OK, Firefox plays it after unblocking twimg.com...missed that I had it blocked.

The video plays on PM and Chrome but when I refresh the twitter page, it wont play.

looking closer, the site uses a link shotener and when I click it, the address quickly changes to https://x.com/MSNovotny/status/20681856 ... 443/video1 then back to https://x.com/MSNovotny/status/2068185697509425443 once the video starts playing.
If I add /video1 to any of my links I mentioned, they all play!

If I add /video1 to any of my links I mentioned, they all play! Whats going on?

You're on to something. If I add the /video1 to my test mentioned in my previous reply, that video plays fine.

Well the "trick" is to add /video1 to the link and it plays fine.
