Basically I have one profile I've been using like forever, and a couple of more recent ones. Recently, the 1st one has started to behave badly. Web page fetches are slow, cloudflare verifications fail (and I end up having to use the 'bypass cloudflare plugin or trying to log in in another profile), and some web sites crash the browser in this profile and work fine in the other one.

I'm unsure what can be affecting things here. Whether my history is causing issues (as I said I've been using this for ages), though I don't see how that'd affect cloudflare verifcation. Certainly whatever the problem is is not fixed by starting in safe mode.

Any suggestions on what might be going on here and how I might recover (and if it involves creating a new profile, how do I copy all my tabs and passwords?)

Try resetting your network.* preferences to their defaults in the problematic profile.

It makes somewhat faster but it doesn't fix the problem with cloudfront (or my recent inability to log into yahoo email, even with ublock and umatrix disabled)

Btw safe mode is only meant to help you diagnose a profile that broke the browser itself to the point of not being usable at all (like crashing on startup, or a faulty add-on hiding all toolbars with no way to go to your preferences and add-ons). It's not meant for web compat issues, which is why another profile worked fine for you.
