Mouse buttons 4 and 5 (the forward/backward) buttons don't seem to register

Post by FullMooner » 2026-01-06, 06:31

Operating system: macos

My issue is that the mouse buttons used for page history navigation (4 and 5 I think) don't seem to work. instead they function the same as clicking the middle mouse button which allows you to scroll really fast with just the direction of the mouse.

this behavior has been ever since I started using Pale Moon (which is very recent). and no plugins, themes or extensions are installed. the mouse buttons work normally with all other apps/browsers. I've tried this with 2 different USB mice, they both have this issue. but my Apple mouse works as expected with its swiping gestures.

I downloaded LinearMouse and set "Enable universal back and forward" which is suppose to map the back and forward side buttons to swiping gestures (seemingly what actually worked with the apple mouse) to allow universal back and forward functionality. But this somewhat surprisingly hasn't worked (yet).

I couldn't find anything on this forum that described a similar problem or with a solution besides one thread that wanted the option to disable these buttons: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... on#p128743

but perplexity helped to find this stack overflow post that described what seems to be the exact issue: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/608 ... g-in-firef

essentially it was a firefox bug that was fixed in Firefox 92 (this was the accepted answer)

but a higher rated answer suggested to use SensibleSideButtons (https://sensible-side-buttons.archagon.net/). And this worked! it simply fixes this bug and doesn't conflict with LinearMouse (that I have found so far).

I originally started this post as an unresolved issue. And even though I resolved it, I figured I might as well post it here that it might help anyone else with a similar issue

actually it does conflict. SensibleSideButtons will catch the side button events before LinearMouse. so when its enabled, it will prevent you from configuring and using these sides buttons (e.g. can't remap them to a certain keyboard shortcut for a particular app etc.)

I said that hastily before I really got to use LinearMouse. but you can run both and quickly enable/disable SensibleSideButtons easily from the top menu bar
