[Solved] Pal moon x32 freezes on startup

Post by MikeB » 2013-10-19, 14:15

An upgrade from Vista on new motherboard. IE10 and Chrome work fine on new AMD X4 motherboard. My other PC, Win7 X64 runs fine with X64 Pale Moon. This upgrade PC for the wife can't get Pale Moon to work. Freezes on load and then unfreezed for a second. Can't get Javascript to even show. Sometime I get a page to load but will freeze on any basic Java. IE and Chrome have not problem. Uninstalled Java and did some other tricks. FF does the same.

When I'm on my Windows 7 (64-bit) operating systems in both of my desktop computers, my default browser for both is 32-bit Pale Moon. The only time Pale Moon (and Firefox) have experienced a freezing problem similar to what you're experiencing was because of a crappy version of Adobe Flash and not related to Java. Are you sure the freezing problem is because of Java?

On both desktops, they have Nvidia graphics cards (GeForce 440 & GeForce 220). Both have i7 processors too.

Please check if your antivirus software is interfering with Pale Moon and that it is up to date. Also, check if your video drivers are up to date and that you don't have any malware on your PC that might try to hook into the browser.

When I can get Pale Moon to run, I can get it to go to a page I go to with basic Java Script. Chrome shows the page with the banner running and two images spinning. The Pale Moon doesn't have either. The image is still and no banner.

You state that Firefox does the same, this points towards a global bug/limitation that's affecting Mozilla -based software.

Could it be related to the Vista>W7 upgrade (perhaps using a Vista graphics driver?) - or was it a clean install?

From about:support, do you see any problems in the graphics section - what WebGL renderer is it using?

Malware is a distinct possibility, especially since you mention Java which has been the most common channel for drive-by infections in the last few years.

I started Pale Moon in safe mode (shift - click icon) Nope, froze on startup
I choose all the options boxes that came up in Safe Mode, choose restart.. BINGO... works.
Some cache file must have gotten corrupt during the upgrade.
Now working on getting Flash plug in to work..
So no Malware...

Possibly it's been some strange profile corruption (probably in the file containing the user interface layout or the preferences file). If Firefox displayed the same issue, you probably got this issue by migrating an already problematic Firefox profile.

Glad to know it got solved!

This HD was actually an XP setup.. erased all drivers.... put this HD in this new PC, got it running on the new hardware, then upgraded to Vista, then from Vista to Win7.
My wife has some 80 programs she was hoping not to lose.
So somewhere something got messed up. Everything seems to run.. of course this took almost two days. Mostly waiting on the hours it took for the updates to install.
Never had to put in a Vista license as you get 30 days grace period. Just need a Win 7 license.

I've personally had really bad experiences with that double upgrade tract. really poor performance resulting from it, and ending up being a ton slower than the original XP. You may really be better off doing a new install using the files and settings transfer wizard, and reinstalling the applications. It just takes some time making inventory what you have, then taking the time to install the programs again but the result will be a system running a lot smoother and more stable.
