I am forced to switch to Firefox :( [Solved]

Post by Snappy Phoenix » 2013-10-16, 07:54

I hate FF after being used to Pale Moon but something is forcing me to, and that is, the add-ons that other programs install

for Internet Download Manager, I have to manually locate and install the *.xpi file of IDM to have its add-on installed.

For Adobe Reader Pro, the addon isn't even installed and I don't know where to find it manually to install it

For AV Programs, it is impossible to have their addons installed such as Kaspersky, Norton, and avast!

I have a small suggestion and I hope it is approved, why not have the setup installer of Pale Moon mimic all the locations of Firefox install directories and have it like tell the OS that Firefox is installed so these programs think that Firefox is there and install the add-ons successfully, but in fact, it is the same old good Pale Moon?

Wouldn't this solution work and end the numerous threads asking about this add-on not installed, etc.?

Please post the softwarelist.txt generated by running the following on the command prompt:

(EDIT: Had posted the wrong command, edited to correct. PMing Matrix Leader about this.)

Code: Select all

reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall" C:\softwarelist.txt
That will give us some hints about where to look.

The suggestion about same profile is not acceptable for PM, since PM isn't just a straight up rebuild of FF - it has many differences to it.

@Matrix Leader (neo ;-) )

It's a bit of a catch-22, and mostly caused by third party software vendors NOT using the normal way of installing extensions (using xpis) but instead having their own installer for it that looks for Firefox specifically (and ONLY Firefox).

Catch-22 because people like you will get fed up using non-mainstream browsers because their installer don't support it, and as a result them not being inclined to add those browsers to their installers (even though all it takes is a different path or checking a different regkey) because the user base is relatively small. You should write to the AV and other vendors to request adding Pale Moon, which is by now gaining a bit of traction and has a 4 year track record.

If they have a proper support department though which you would expect from a commercial business, they should be able to help you out with instructions.

To install Avast's WebReb, copy the contents of C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\WebRep\FF to your Desktop then create a zip file with them called WebRep.xpi; drag that file into a Pale Moon window and install it, restart Pale Moon to activate.

Once done, delete the files and zip/xpi.

Unfortunately Mr. Moonchild, your browswer has spoiled me, I tried switching back to Firefox 24 but its uglier interface and it being slower immediately threw me off and I'm back to Pale Moon

I have a NOD32 / 3 year license so I installed it instead of avast! AV Pro since NOD32 doesn't have any add-ons to install

Pale Moon FTW

Thanks a lot for these instructions, they came a bit too late though coz I've switched to NOD32

I appreciate it
