Q.: HOW CAN I UPDATE PALE MOON BROWSER?
I WANT TO UPDATE PALE MOON 28.13.0 (64-BIT PORTABLE) ON FOSSAPUP64 TO PALE MOON BROWSER 33.7.1 LINUX X86_64

How can I update the Pale Moon browser (portable version) on Fossapup 64?
I apologize if this has already been answered, but I did some searches and couldn't find any exact instructions on the Puppy Linux forums
or the Pale Moon forum (it is totally possible that I missed it and if so, I am worry to bother you again). I am an absolute novice and just
can't figure out how to get this browser updated.

WHY AM I SEEKING HELP?
I need to upgrade Pale Moon 28.13.0 to 33.7.1 (or another newer version) so that I can install the newly available security patches.

WHAT I TRIED SO FAR:
- I downloaded palemoon-33.7.1.linux-x86_64-gtk3 and unpacked it. I tried to install it that way, but it looks like my system is limited
by the constraints of "Busybox."

(I am pretty new to Linux/Ubuntu and the "BusyBox." I have used other Linux/Ubuntu distros in the past
with more feature-rich terminal consoles and they could all be easily updated/upgraded from those consoles, so the issue may lie with
trying to update this browser with "BusyBox" as the vector. In "BusyBox," I had no response to standard commands to do simple things
such as trying to update the operating system via repositories, installing the browser update, etc. I will keep trying to figure out if that is
the issue.)

- I turned on automatic updates in the top bar settings for Pale Moon. Then, I restarted the browser.

- I restarted the computer.

- I switched from the Fossapup limited internet user, "Spot," to the administrator user. Then, I restarted the browser and computer again.

- I skimmed through the visible settings of Fossapup64 and Pale Moon (and the websites and forums of both), searching for "update Pale Moon
broswer on Fossapup." (I found some information, but not enough to successfully complete the task of upgrading the browser. Again, it is possible
that I missed something, but I have been looking for a few days now and could really use some assistance.)

HELP REQUESTED
Please tell me how I can update my installation of Pale Moon according to the information provided above.
Do I have to uninstall Pale Moon, and then install the newer version in order to update the browser? If so, how would I do that?
Is there another way to update the Pale Moon browser that I am missing? Please provide detailed instructions if possible.

Thank you in advance for any help or resources you can provide. I appreciate your time.

Greetings, fellow Puppy user.

1. Download Pale Moon's official .tar.xz from this website.
2. In ROX filer, right-click the Pale Moon .tar.xz and use UExtract to unpack the contents to where ever. You're a Puppy user, so already running root privileges, so you can just write to anyplace you please (user beware). Just any empty folder in /opt or what have you will be fine.
3. v.28 is ancient. Since then, certain file formats stored in the profile have changed. You actually can't jump straight to 33.7.1, you have to install a couple of older versions first to perform the most necessary and 100% unavoidable format upgrades 1st. I'll let the other patrons here explain this process, since the details escape me. OR, you can just nuke your old profile and start anew, if you have nothing to lose.

Also, mikewalsh over @ Puppy Linux forums (section Browsers and Internet) maintains a Puppy compatible package of Pale Moon that works with non-AVX systems (CPU requirements were hiked last year). Maybe bend their ear a bit as well?

Forgot to mention that you don't need to mess with Spot for this process. No package managers are involved, Pale Moon runs as is under root privileges. Just UExtract to any ol' folder, navigate there with ROX filer and mouse click on the "palemoon" executable to launch the process. There, done.

Sorry for dredging up a weeks-old old thread, guys.

@ null_ID:-

Actually, since it's packed as a ROX-app these days, there's no need even to click on 'palemoon' at ALL. The 'LAUNCH' script & 'AppRun' files are already set-up internally. Just click on the ROX-app's directory.....and Pale Moon (Nuck-TH's build) will fire straight up.

How's that for simple?

(As you probably know, rt-clk -> Look Inside will give you access to the MenuAdd/MenuRemove scripts.....which will add OR remove a Menu entry.....from wherever the 'portable' sits. And as I've said before, our portable is in no way an attempt to pass Nuck-TH's work off as our own. It's simply a re-packaging effort to make it more convenient for Puppians to use.)

The credit belongs firmly with Nuck-TH. And very grateful some of us are, too! :)
