Cleaning/ reducing profile folder

Post by dapgo » 2024-11-03, 18:43

To reduce the time for a backup or sync to another disc, I am seeing that i have too many small files and folders

I am sure i can remove the cache but what is the best practises for cleaning the profile?

How important is the /storage/ folder? what is stored there?

For example in storage/persistent i can see a folder with irrelevant content from a page that i visited years ago.
So, do the page decide to store as persistent?

Anyway in storage/temporary I can also see folders for page that i've visited to very time ago

Consequences of removing the /storage/ folder?

What is the folder "OfflineCache"?

It for DOM local storage. That is usually used for storing larger amounts of data that would not be as easy to store in cookies. What is stored there and how important it is, or how long something is stored, is entirely dependent on the websites visited.
So... it's about as important as cookies would be. If you remove it, you may lose website logins, settings or saved data in web apps.

That is a different mechanism for a website to store data (usually static data) allowing websites to continue working even if you are no longer connected to the internet that would otherwise rely on server data. It's not used much anymore these days but it's still a useful technology.

Don't mess around manually with the files. Use the option to clear the cache in Preferences->Advanced->Cache, and then backup your folder.

The storage folder is as heavy weight as the cache2 folder , more than a 1gb and 20.000 files.
Clearly some stored info hasn't been used for a long time and will not be used again

Pale Moon files in APPDATA/Local afaik have no critical importance, being cache and updates history. Barring some extensions that fancy storing their settings/data there, it can be safely ignored for purposes of backup.

Is there a extension to clean just the oldest/(probably) not needed data?

Even I suppose that most webpages will not try to use their own stored data if is is older than a year

Not really, unless you use a file manager and sort by date?

I wouldn't count on that.

This file-list is enough for backing up my profile; all other files in the folder are not needed for my backups:

Code: Select all

bookmarks.html
content-prefs.sqlite
cookies.sqlite
logins.json
permissions.sqlite
places.sqlite
prefs.js
sessionCheckpoints.json
sessionstore.js
; webappsstore.sqlite

But that doesn't include extensions. A profile backup w/o extensions would be worthless to me. But if it suits you...

Just back up your entire profile folder while Pale Moon isn't running, you'll get everything working exactly as before on your new location or after you restore it.

Good point. The XPI extension install-files are backed up separately. Yes restoring from backup would mean re-installing all extensions. Probably an opportunity to not-install some stuff that is no longer used ;)
