browser lag and freezing up while trying to browse

Unread post by cartel » 2024-10-29, 02:07

Operating system:7 64bit
Browser version:32.4.1
32-bit or 64-bit browser?:64
Problem URL:summit racing, amazon, ebay, youtrube
Browser theme (if not default):glowing black
Installed add-ons:ubo noscript ref contol no squint
Installed plugins: (about:plugins):sumatra pdf

If possible, please include the output of help->troubleshooting information (as text):
**PASTE troubleshooting information here**
I tried the latest browser. they are all lagging hard after a short time on these sites. It took me all morning to navigate summit racing to get a order put together while doing captchas every second click also.
The browser starts to just stop responding for 10 seconds at a time at first every 30 seconds or so then it gets worse and worse till its freezing up every 3 seconds. I have to wait and it does this and then text I entered starts to catch up like someone else it typing it as I watch.
same with ebay. and captchas every turn I take. Every open window suffers when this happens. I been trying to deal with this for months but today is the last straw and I must report this.

Why is it doing this? sites like youtube seem to trigger it and even when I close youtube of google it continues. and even when there is no youtube pages loaded it eventually does it with the other sites I mentioned.

Is anyone else dealing with this also?

Is it because I have cache shut off? or webGL's disabled? why so many captchas? why is google telling me my browser may not be secure when I try to log in? then it refuses to let me log in several times saying try again and the browser is not secure? Should I just give up on my favorite browser?

whats going on?

thanks

NoScript = no help. This has been explained multiple times already, and since you choose to ignore that, deal with it yourself.

And reporting from v32.4.1 which is one year old at this point... :coffee:

It sounds like OP is experiencing the ghost windows problem though which got mostly addressed in v33.4.0's introduction of ghostbuster.

Your profile may also have been borked by NoScript.
Check in a fresh profile on the latest version of Pale Moon.

I have tried a new profile multiple times
I have years of settings and custom user agents, things I have disabled. I should just abandon all that?
Everything that happens its just too convenient for you to blame noscript.

I've played this game before and always the same result
Its lagging up right now again. I will try this once more.

I could also say it's just too convenient for you to ignore the obvious because it so happens to have been your set of tools for a long time.

ok I have a new profile now WITHOUT noscript but the other extentions like ublock installed.
It is still lagging but not as bad yet. I will try the latest version and keep testing but it still lags and my typing and if I copy text and try to paste it on another browser such as chrome, it somehow lags the clipboard paste.
I will report back

ok I made a video visually illustrate a major part of the problem I am experiencing here.
I am scrolling my mouse up and down and the lag hits and freezes the page temporarily then continues then lags again at a unknown interval. (every 5 seconds?)
Then I type a letter into the text box and hold the letter and it shows the text stop inputting in the search box the same intervals as the scrolling did. this lag happens if I'm typing scrolling or not. It gets worse and worse and worse as time goes by. it affects all PM windows and any copy/paste actions. It lags everything I do with the browser and after time it will affect windows explorer windows a bit too. Super annoying. Its doing it just like you see as I type this

I cant make it much easier for you to see.

This is what I've been living with for several years now.

https://files.catbox.moe/cmo7n8.mp4

I hope that helps you understand more the issues I have.
this is with no noscript and a new profile

thank you

The "www.summitracing.com" website leaves behind 5 ghost windows, with 4 of them being from the PayPal loaded in the site it seems. Whatever the website you've given as an example is doing, it's not really coded well.

The ghost windows eventually got removed by ghostbuster after a while and the scrolling and typing lag went away for me after that happened. I'm using my usual profile in 33.4.0.1 (latest PM version).

Cleaning up ghost windows does not happen immediately. It takes considerable time to first designate something as a ghost window, then mark it as such, then sever it from the browser resource pool and then actually clean it up. It's both multi-stage and asynchronous.
There's only so much we can do to mitigate problematic site design. You won't see this in multi-process browsers because the lag will occur just as hard but it'll be in a "content process" which won't affect the browser UI. This is also the reason why webdesign has gone downhill in that respect because the problems aren't noticed (as much) by webmasters.

As to why it'd be worse in a later version... might have something to do with us supporting more of the ever-growing collection of drafts and proposals allowing for more things to go wrong.

@ cartel

I am on YouTube everyday always looking for any new uploaded surfing videos. I experience no lagging or anything else you described. I also do not have a YouTube account so I am never logged into YouTube.

I have made specific changes for YouTube in Pale Moon which also helps, specifically keeping their ads at bay. But if Google which owns YouTube finds out, I am sure they will "close the back door" so my changes will no longer work. And I have never used NoScript.

My desktop tower has plenty of memory (32 GB), a good graphics card which allows me to view videos in 2160 HD 4K mode, 12th generation Intel i7 processor with a processor speed of 3.60, 800 watts power supply and my internet download speed is around 585 Mbps so this helps too.

When one has a YouTube account and logs in, YouTube can be a pain to deal with if one is not using Chrome. YouTube likes to discriminate against other browsers which leads to problems. This is why people will get a prompt saying their browser is not supported or flat out telling someone to use Chrome.

I understand your frustration, but the problem is not with Pale Moon. Your frustration should be directed to Google which owns YouTube. But if you complain to Google, you will get the stock answer of, "Use Google Chrome".

To make a point for other browsers being discriminated against; if you have a backup browser to Pale Moon such as Firefox, have your computer settings to put your computer to sleep after 5 minutes of no keyboard input while a YouTube video is playing. The video will just keep playing and your computer will not go to sleep. This also happens with Waterfox.

When I use Pale Moon, my computer will go sleep as it's designated time from no keyboard input and the video will stop playing and there is no sound. This is why I like to use Pale Moon when I am using YouTube when playing some of my sleep videos to help me get to sleep when I am over tired and cannot get to sleep on my own.

But ghostbuster can only remove ghost window(s)/tab(s) and it can't kill/stop what ghost window/tab is running:

Well because companies like google are making life difficult for PM is why I keep using it. I hate the "new" web designs. I appreciate you guys and gals chiming in to help and I would like to get this solved. If you watched the video you can see the lag that happens and how it freezes everything up. that doesnt take long to develop. I love palemoon its been a part of my life literally for over a decade. I trust it and I trust the people here that produce it. I'm not gonna give up on it and although I use chrome portable for some things I do not trust it and do not use it for my banking and such like I do PM

I hope somehow we can find a solution

thanks,

Chris

I believe what you say about the last version (33.4.1) since I upgraded PM has crashed several times, and several times got unresponsive for a long time.
I don't hgave no-Script addon, and all addons and pages were loaded with previous PM versions.
I had no time to troubleshoot or pay attention to console, but I'll try as soon as i've more time

I am running 64 bit linux Pale Moon 33.4.1 (GTK2) on four computers (2 desktop towers, 2 laptops). These four computers are using three different 64 bit linux distros (Mint, MX Linux, Debian).

The two desktop towers have Intel i7 processors in them with processor speeds of 3.40 and (3.60). Both towers have 32 GB of memory in them. They both use the same type of graphics card in them. And both towers have three, Samsung 500 GB, SSD's in them.

I have Comcast as my ISP which gives me about 585 Mbps download speed (ethernet cable) which is not too bad since I live in a small rural town in southeast Texas. I have no problem going to the sites people are having problems with. I will say I do something different with YouTube since I do not have a YouTube account.

The two laptops are 14", 64 bit HP computers, (models dv4-5113cl and dv4-5213cl) with 16 GB of memory in each and both have a Intel i5 processor in them with both having 2.50 processor speeds. Also these laptops have a Samsung 500 GB, SSD in them. Both of these laptops can handle AVX and that is saying something for these laptop computers which were manufactured in the years of 2012 and 2013.

l will say this. These laptops do not regularly visit YouTube because the wi-fi download speed is around 23 Mbps at my home. That is too slow for the high definition modes (1080p, 1440p, 2160p 4K) which I like to watch videos in.

I have never downloaded NoScript either. Even if one had NoScript installed at one time and then uninstalled it, it leaves behind problems. A new profile usually solves this problem if NoScript is the cause of the problem. But too many people do not want to install a clean new profile without addons, custom settings, custom themes, etc, because it is a "hassle" for them.

Some people in this topic thread having problems, may not like what I am about to say, but version 33.4.1 is "not" the problem for the majority of people using Pale Moon whether it be for the Windows (7, 10, 11) operating system or a linux distro.

Just so you know, I opened that site with the latest Pale Moon, with eMatrix, uBlock and Pure URL extensions, and it ran great for me. With eMatrix I was blocking scripts from every domain except summitracing, hcaptcha, and jwpcdn (for the videos). See my screenshot for the eMatrix unblocking.

2 caveats - 1) if you are running Win7 then my system is probably a lot faster than yours, as mine has a 13th generation Intel cpu running a free software version of Ubuntu called Trisquel GNU/Linux; 2) If I wanted to buy something from summitracing website I would probably have to unblock scripts from more domains in eMatrix. But just generally browsing the site and watching videos doesn't seem to cause any lagging at all.

Yes, I am running PM 32bits on a Win10 (64bits) but the crashes are not associated to an specific web, last crash happened using googlemaps, but i can't reproduce it

@ dapgo

At first, I had to verify I was "human" to get to the Summit site. That was easy. Once on the site, it wanted me to accept cookies so I did. I then proceeded to surf all over the site. Still no problems.

At this posting, I am using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 33.4.1 (GTK2) running in 64 bit linux Mint 22 (Wilma) Xfce. I do not use any anti-virus program in any of the three linux distros I use which you can see in my signature.

I also have the "old" uBlock Origin 1.16.4.30 installed and it was enabled for the Summit site. The only other extension I have installed is Zoom Label (1.3). The theme I use for Pale Moon is Past Modern Revisited (2.10.2).

The specs for this desktop tower I am using is below.
