Changing the Title Bar contents

Unread post by missenc » 2024-10-16, 20:11

Windows, Palemoon 32.1

We're using Palemoon with great results for our offline Chipster Personal Libraries. (http://Chipster.org)

There's a small change I'd like to make and I've spent way too much time trying to solve it: how I can change the Palemoon Title Bar to include the name of the Chipster (ChipsterEd, ChipsterMed, ChipsterEthiopia,...)?

Thanks!

In the <head> of the html pages, make sure you include the information you want in a <title> tag.
e.g. for this thread, the <head> contains:

Code: Select all

Thanks, but this is not quite what I'm looking for.

My current title bar reads, in blue menu box, "Pale Moon", then, in the grey bar, "Chipster Personal Library" (taken from the document header title), and then, " - Pale Moon".
Screenshot 2024-10-17 161858.png
The second "Pale Moon" insinuates that the Chipster is created by or is endorsed by Pale Moon. I've fielded questions about "Who is this Pale Moon?" Some of my African colleagues assume that, since I'm the whitest guy they know who has a big butt, it refers to me! They assume it's my "cheekish" nickname.

I'd prefer to avoid the humiliation and make the distinction that the browser is Pale Moon and that the Chipster Version is the source of the content below.

So the menu bar would read: Pale Moon | Chipster Personal Library | ChipsterEd V3.4

Can do?

The first blue Pale Moon should be a Window-ism, I do not have it on Linux.
The main title bar is whatever you put in the html <title> plus appended "- Pale Moon".
Anyhow this is what you see, and any person viewing your site with Pale Moon will see, but people viewing your site with other viewers will not see it.

So you should not worry. Pale Moon acts nicely putting in the title bar both the html title and the browser name. Useful to pinppoint the window in a window manager. Not susre what other browsers do.

If you want to change the "title modifier" which is the suffix to the window title ("- Pale Moon" in this case) then you can't do that at the moment as it takes it directly from the branding assets and isn't configurable, as it is an identifier for the application name (important for identifying in the task bar, etc.)

This. Words speak to me much more than icons, and having the name of each app on the Windows Task bar is a big benefit.

I guess you missed the part where OP explained Pale Moon is being provided (portable edition I assume) as the viewer for WWW-on-a-drive solutions for those without Internet access.

Actually, I just checked Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox both still have this particular kind of window title if you look at the Alt-Tab menu or mouse over the icon in the task bar. That is, in those views you can see the name of the web page, a dash, and then the name of the browser.

They've both worked around this issue visually by not having a proper, visible window title at all. It's possible that this is why they've done away with window titles altogether, because people were getting confused as to whether the content was connected to the browser in some way or not...

I've also noticed that if you use a theme like Material Moon, the issue goes away because using that theme, Pale Moon does not display a proper window title at all, just like Edge or Firefox.

We do live in a world where even people from first-world countries barely understand the difference between Google Search and Google Chrome, and this is literally a case where people from third-world countries who likely lack tech literacy and likely speak English as a second language are misunderstanding the concept of web page as a document within a web browser, instead expecting the web page to stand on its own and be the only thing they see.

If you want to disable the title bar title, check the FAQ. Specifically viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3766
