Palemoon not starting
W10 22H2:
Palemoon, last version OR Firefox 129.02:
64-bit browser?:
Since about 5 days, Palemoon just doesn't start : I have message about not succeeding to start (0xc0000142) and I can't not get rid of it, even when clicking OK !
I tried to load the last version and to reinstall it, but to no avail.
I have no virus and I don't know what to do.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Palemoon not starting
You are probably on old hardware that doesn't support AVX instructions in the processor, which is required since 33.3.0.
Try installing the SSE2 version instead, kindly provided by Nuck-TH, from ftp://ftp.palemoon.org/AVX/

Re: Palemoon not starting
Thank you for your quick answer, but I'm afraid it not the good explanation : Palemoon DID worked on this machine, but suddenly stopped!
And I can't use the ftp link...

Re: Palemoon not starting
If it did work and the current version doesn't, it is an indicator that your machine doesn't support AVX.
Please post your processor model.
Why can't you use the ftp link?
If you are in Windows, you can mount ftp sources in the windows explorer by typing the ftp URL in the path field (normally there is something like C:\users\ etc.)

First step: go to Help/Troubleshooting Information/CPU Capabilities and report back.
Second step, depending on previous one: use that FTP link. If for whatever reason you can't (Pale Moon shouldn't have problems with it - perhaps you are using some other version?), this link should work: https://ftp2.palemoon.org/avx/

I'm afraid that doesn't prove anything, until you provide more information. That explanation was perfectly logical. Also, what Firefox 129.02 has to do with this?

Re: Palemoon not starting
Hi, everybody !
Thanks for your answers and ideas. I confirm I said a nonsense : Palemoon worked on this (old) machine... until the last update! The installed version was 33.3.0. and my processor is a Pentium G850, certainly without AVX!
Thanks to your advice about ftp, I was able to load the SSE version and everything works fine again.
Isn't this version likely to be overwritten in a future update? And what does SSE means ?
Thank you very much

Re: Palemoon not starting
No, because SSE2 (and AVX2) community builds use their own update channel.
As a matter of fact, you should not have been served an update from 33.2.1 to 33.3.0 if your processor didn't support AVX, so it's a bit of a mystery how you ended up in this situation to begin with, unless you manually installed or maybe used an external updater?

External updater? You're right : I recently used "Patch my PC" Who is certainly the culprit...
Thanx for the SSE link.
Have a nice day!

This is also impacting Windows winget installs & updates. Windows 11 23H2 on ancient hardware:

The installer doesn't winge. Reinstalled it generates a 142 error when I attempt to run it.
From a CPU-Z report: Instructions sets MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, EM64T, VT-x
SSE4.1 is sufficient to get Windows 11 23H2 up, but Windows 11 24H2 would require SSE4.2

That's on an old quintuple-boot machine. I suspect it may be a similar story on its OS X El Capitan Palemoon upgraded via Homebrew casks. I'll come back on that ...

Re: Palemoon not starting
We have an internal updater and infra for a reason. Our infra won't provide a mainline update if your hardware doesn't support AVX. This has been carefully set up over several version updates to avoid issues...
I'm sorry you're having trouble, but if you use a third-party/custom way of updating the software, then you are pretty much on your own. You'll have to switch to the SSE2 builds by Nuck-TH, and you should adjust your third-party/custom updater to point to the relevant download locations if you insist on continuing to update that way.

I have similar error code 0xc0000142 on each of three Dell desktops running Windows 10. I found Pale Moon runs in version 33.2.1 but updates 33.3 and 33.4 generates the error code.
I tried re-installation of Pale Moon and some common fixes but the best fix is to run only on version 33.2.1
No bother really!
