Some sites display big black Q

Unread post by Walter Dnes » 2024-06-22, 14:45

Operating system: Gentoo linux
Browser version:33.2.0 (64 bit) (GTK2)
32-bit or 64-bit browser?:64
Problem URL: https://www.space.com and https://www.livescience.com/ and others show a big black "Q" as per the attached image. The rest of the page does show up, badly formatted, as I page down. And of-course "it works OK in Chrome".
Browser theme (if not default):
Installed add-ons: none
Installed plugins: (about:plugins): none
Note: I created a brand new test profile, so no extensions or weird "about:config" settings

If possible, please include the output of help->troubleshooting information (as text):

That's not a "Q" but rather a magnifying glass.

Looks like it's missing its styling, probably because of the use of @layer
We have it on our list of things to address: Issue #2486 (UXP)

Here's the error console for the live science website. I deleted repeated errors (there were a lot).

For space.com fix, see:

https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=31002
Question: In which file do I insert the filter...

Code: Select all

[["/www\\.(space|tomshardware)\\.com/",["/^[^.]*$/",["/@layer \\w+\\ ?{/g",""]]]]

Need Modify HTTP Response.

See here:

https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?p=244013#p243990

Adding livescience works:

Code: Select all

[["/www\\.(space|tomshardware|livescience)\\.com/",["/^[^.]*$/",["/@layer \\w+\\ ?{/g",""]]]]

Thanks for everybody's help. The three sites now work. It was a bit of running around. Should I post a quickie HOWTO install, since it's still fresh in my memory?

Yes please. I have the OP problem on a few sites, and have no idea what to do about it.

Step by step

1) Go to https://github.com/JustOff/modify-http- ... e/releases

2) Download the latest version to your hard drive. Today it's modhresponse-1.3.8.xpi

3) Make sure that you're in the profile you want to install to

4) from that profile, in your browser, go "File ==> Open file", navigate to the .xpi file and click "Open".

5) Click "Install Now" when it asks for permission. It's always a qoestion of "Do you trust the author?"

6) In the browser, go to "Tools ==> Ad-ons"

7) Go to "Extensions" if you aren't there already

8) Click on the "Preferences" button of "Modify HTTP Response"

9) In the "Filters" box copy+paste
[["/www\\.(space|tomshardware|livescience)\\.com/",["/^[^.]*$/",["/@layer \\w+\\ ?{/g",""]]]]

10 ) Remember to click the "Enable" checkbox immediately above the filters box.

11) The filter in step 9 covers space.com. tomshardware.com, and livescience.com. Any additional sites you run into will have to be added manually. This issue/bug is already listed at https://repo.palemoon.org/MoonchildProd ... ssues/2486 and we' hopefully will not need this workaround soon.

Hey thanks, will try it.
Did the OP issue have to do with the known problem of sites serving SVG (as glyphs or little graphics or whatever) and browsers not knowing how to display the scaling properly?

I am having a similar problem with printing on https://investor.vanguard.com/home.

When you try to print/preview from ANY page on the site, it just gives you those funny "black shapes" with nothing else to print.

I wonder if there is a filter fix for this in Modify Http Response?

No. See the 2nd post in this thread. As per Moonchild, it's the "@layer" issue, which the team is working on..

I looked at it, and it seems quite different. You could start a separate thread about it.

modify-http-response has always been sort-of-black-magic for me, documentation-wise.
If you or somebody knowledgeable with it (adoxa?) would provide a guide to use the "launch editor" it would be greatly appreciated (perhaps in a dedicated thread).

In another post, adoxa taught me a trick to add a filter to an existing one: remove last close square bracket of the four, put a comma, paste the new filter with just one opening square bracket: it works and now I have two filters in but with a better understanding I could perhaps use the editor, and maybe avoiding syntax errors.

I have had this issue as well, But yeah, I never thought whether it was a Q or a magnifying glass. I just usually ignored it and went elsewhere.

But it does make more sense that its a magnifying glass. I didn't think that issue was this common lol.

Like so many extensions I've seen - this one has a horrible UX, not even there as an afterthought. It's why I forked Pure URL, for example - that one also was originally a restartless extension with all the garbage fields as a long comma separated list.

You as an end user shouldn't have to enter a programmatically correct array of arrays as a parameter. Apparently displaying a dialog box with an editable list of filters is rocket science compared to the actual filtering code

This involves "regular expressions". If you "ask Mr. Google" to search for...

regular expression tutorial

...you'll get a whole bunch of hits, such as https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/write-reg ... pressions/ You can read it if you're interested. Characters with special meanings:

* the vertical bar "|" is a "logical OR".
* the period "." is a one-character wildcard. If you mean "really-a-period", you have to "escape" it like so "\\."
* the parentheses means any-match-of-the-choices-inside"

www\\.(space|tomshardware)\\.com/ matches either of "www.space.com/" or "www.tomshardware.com/"
www\\.(space|tomshardware|livescience)\\.com/ matches any of "www.space.com/" or "www.tomshardware.com/" or "www.livescience.com/"
www\\.(space|tomshardware|livescience|bad.example)\\.com/ matches any of "www.space.com/" or "www.tomshardware.com/" or "www.livescience.com/" or "www.bad.example.com/"
etc, etc, etc

It gets uglier when you mix .com with .net and/or .org, but it can be done. There's probably a limit of 1000 characters or so for the filter expression.

A couple of points...

1) This extension is modifying incoming HTML code. If you know what you're doing rewriting HTML, we can usually assume you understand regexes.

2) A dialogue for stringing together a few ".com" URLs is "easy". Try setting up a dialog that generates a regex that handles a mix of ".com", ".net", ",org", and ",co.uk" URLs. Doing that manually is easier.

Neither of your points address what I said, and I wasn't even talking about 'stringing together' regexes. Just a simple list instead of expecting you to enter an entire Javascript array of arrays where each individual entry is already syntactically complex.
The less a person has to physically input, the less chances of making mistakes.
What's easier for the end user, entering each filter in a textbox so that it is displayed as a list below, or an ever expanding entry that's too long to be shown on screen because the developer was so lazy he decided to make the user do all the work of filter construction and just pick it up?
Pure URL internally uses an array of garbage fields as well; the original Firefox version's creator was a similar genius who dumped in a single textbox and called it a day. Now you add each extra field and can scroll the list and see the other ones as well as remove them if required.
