I am trying to get the Save/Open With window to show up, by opening the mp3 links here, but the browser's internal player always comes up. I've set all Applications/Actions to "Always Ask" - also disabled plug-ins & add-ons, but I still get the player.
Never had this with 20.3 (not sure about 24, now on 24.0.1). Thanks.

firefox 21 now makes use of the codecs that are included in your OS that enable it to directly play mp3 & mpeg files (also for html5 videos). in order to disable that, enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named media.windows-media-foundation.enabled. double-click it and change its value to false.
another way to download the files without tweaking the preference mentioned above would be to right-click the link that leads to a mp3 file or right-click the player in firefox and choose to download the file like that...

Thanks, changing that works. Makes you wonder what's the point of the "Applications" settings though, if the default is to just ignore them. Glad you like it.

Disabling the media foundation overall will disable a LOT more than just what is intended. It would e.g. remove support for embedded H.264 video...
If you want non-embedded media files to be played externally, you should set media.windows-media-foundation.play-stand-alone to false - that will continue to allow all media formats in embedded setups, but will offer to open externally otherwise.
PS: A quicker way to save them to disk would be Alt+Click.

Having the same problem, media.windows-media-foundation.play-stand-alone remains set to false, but browser's internal player forces itself again on these mp3 files. Maybe something broke with the new updates?
I recently installed QuickTime, but also reverted relevant Application options to Always Ask and disabled QT's Play movies automatically setting. It somehow interferes though, since disabling it solves the problem. When the mp3 are played internally, I don't see any sign the QT plugin is enabled (plugins.always_show_indicator=true).
