Costco Ad Viewed in hotmail Freezes Palemoon

Unread post by FourthDr » 2024-03-19, 07:51

Operating system: windows 7
Browser version: 33.0.1
32-bit or 64-bit browser?: 64
Problem URL: hotmail/costco ad
Browser theme (if not default): default
Installed add-ons: ublock
Installed plugins: (about:plugins):

After updating from Palemoon 32.5.2 to 33.0.1, Palemoon freezes and then become non-responsive. I then need to terminate Palemoon to restore functionally. This only seems to happen when trying to view a Costco ad email. Not when opening, for example a Costco message related to a purchase or account related messages.

Also, I noticed that v 33.0.1 has "hard disabled" noscript. Which leaves me without script blocking protection. Non of the officially supported add-ons is remotely similar to noscript. So disabling it just has left me with less protection. Not good. :( I know, not supported because of stability issues. But I have had more issues since it was disables. Specifically the hotmail/costco ad lockup/freeze/non-responsive problem.

What do you suppose it going on? :?

Wrong. Look harder. And if you love NoScript so much, go and ask its developer to support Pale Moon.

I signed up for Costco email ads with a family member's old outlook.com email address, to see if I could replicate this problem. Today Costco sent an advertisement email. I used the eMatrix Pale Moon extension to block cookies, media, scripts, XHR and frames from costco.com and costco-static.com while still allowing css and images to load. I was able to view the ad without freezing up Pale Moon.

Once I unblocked those items from the two costco domains Pale Moon's cpu usage skyrocketed and after a couple of minutes the browser froze up, even though I had disabled the costco domains again and closed the browser tab. I'll try it again and try to catch the error console messages, as I was unable to catch them this time.

Edit: Here's what I was able to log when I tried it a second time:

Moral of the story - use an adblocker. It seriously isn't worth jeopardizing the browser's stability for an ad of all things.

Which Pale Moon add-on do you recommend in place of noscript? I believe I actually did as their developers to support Pale Moon. I suppose I could ask again. Also, FYI https://addons.palemoon.org/extensions/ ... -security/ is currently returning a "404 Not Found ginx/1.24.0" in case you guys didn't know.

eMatrix, forked from uMatrix (by the author of uBlock Origin) together with uBlock Origin itself will have you covered. Of course it looks different from NoScript and there's a learning curve but that's the deal with any new piece of software.

It's working right now and I don't recall seeing that in the past unless maybe when the site is rarely taken down for some very brief maintenance.

There was a temporary issue with nginx after a reboot due to file system ownership, but that should be solved.

Most of the early morning both the https://forum.palemoon.org and https://addons.palemoon.org/extensions/ ... -security/ had been cycling alternately between working and that 404 Not Found ginx/1.24.0 error. Currently for me as of 11:47Am PDT 3/31/2024 the add-on sub domain is still 404.

The forum and addons sites are on entirely different servers, so that doesn't make any sense if it were server-side.
I also checked your IP and and it isn't in the web server logs, and there are no 404s recorded in the logs for anything that would be normal traffic (the only listed items are a few hot-linked images that no longer exist, etc.). If you're using some kind of caching proxy or what not, you may want to look into something wrong with that.

Well, some really weird things have been going on. I was just going to let you know that the websites where both working when I clicked to rely, I immediately got a 404 again(~1:50AM PDT 4-1-2024). I was also going to comment on the sudden forum color change to a pink theme? So I restarted and was able to access both sites ok(so far). I would also like to mention that during one previous 404 I tried just loading the forum root (https://forum.palemoon.org) and to my surprised I got the add-on site for basilisk browser. Go figure. And no, I have never used a proxy. I'm just as baffled as you are. After restarting Palemoon I tried loading the forum root again and it actually displayed the expected forum page. These issues are just bizarre. Only thing I can think of is someone was playing an April Fool prank on me.
