Out of curiosity did anyone from Cloudflare own up and tell people what happened. Or am I being stupid?
"What happened" was simply that they only test against "supported browsers" basically not understanding they are gatekeeping the internet as a whole and can't just arbitrarily put minimum requirements on every browser use out there...

As a result of my exchange they have now added "Firefox 52" to their test suite since they still don't understand we are an independent fork and not "Old Firefox 52" (I've made another attempt at explaining it again in my reply). While it'll likely reduce the chance of breakage it's not optimal, but I guess we'll have to take what we can get.

I guess it will break again once Firefox ESR (that's what 52 is, isn't it?) jumps versions, right?

No, it isn't. It's several years out of date.

Cloudflare is not the right name...

I saw once some website refer to it as buttflare.

This is the name it should be called, because its a pile of crap.

De-anonymization + user sniffing + many insecurities

Wonderful...

Just when I thought the web had enough problems.

The first thing is bad enough on its own.

Even though personally, I am not getting cloudflare checks during my web browsing in Pale Moon, the fact that this thread keeps growing got me curious enough to want to check out the URL in the original post.

So I did, and this is what I got. I have issues greater than a private corporation doing some gatekeeping.

Not really. It's primarily just a reverse proxy service. It doesn't de-anonymize users or sniff them. And in fact it protects website owners from quite a bit of malicious user behaviour. I also haven't heard of "insecurities". Yes, it does mean centralization of web traffic which isn't necessarily a good thing and could lead to regional segregation, but ultimately it is just a proxy tool with inherent advantages and disadvantages. So before you echo "pile of crap" I suggest you take a bit more time to understand what it is and is not.

Yeah I gathered something like this would happen sooner or later because it wasn't exactly on the level.
It does show that CloudFlare takes action when necessary to prevent bad actors from "hiding behind" their proxy service if they do something illegal.

I hadn't looked at this thread since they fixed this. As of today it appears that the site in my original post may have stopped using those checks. I never get them at all even in private windows. Maybe someone's paying attention to how badly Cloudflare is handling this crap(?). I can only hope.

Thanks, I've added this information to the (still open) support ticket.

So far they haven't responded to me. and in fact their ticketing system seems to have effectively ghosted me without replies or e-mail copies or notifications.

I'm writing to the EFF and see if they can help with how broadly this impacts the web.

Answered earlier in this thread. See previous pages. Use another browser or the workaround.

I doubt they are even reading my attempts at contacting them at the moment. but good to know they are indeed causing wider issues by assuming that (1) all their traffic is web browsers that can be updated and (2) all their traffic is web browsers that can be replaced by their commercial shortlist ones
