Changing behaviour of links to non-web pages

How does one make it so that links to given file types which are not web pages open a dialogue window or in their own application instead of Pale Moon? For example, if I want addresses ending in .jpg trigger the open-save dialogue menu when followed instead of opening the image within the browser, how would I do this? How would I then remove it from the list to restore default behaviour? For at least some files, toggling media.xxx.enabled suffices, but others are not listed, and I am curious.

Preferences -> Applications lists all recognized filetypes and you can specify whether to save file,open in associated app or always ask.
