IPv.6 questions

Unread post by moonbob69 » 2024-02-07, 04:30

Operating system:n/a
Browser version:all
32-bit or 64-bit browser?:both
Problem URL:n/a
Browser theme (if not default):
Installed add-ons:none
Installed plugins: (about:plugins):none

The about:config options, "network.dns.disableIPv6" (default:false) and "network.notify.IPv6" (default:true) are apparently in Firefox also, but DuckDuck doesn't find any definitions. "Disable IPv6 DNS" seems obvious enough, but what does "network.notify.IPv6" do?

Are there websites (with long-held IPv4 addresses) whose named back-end servers exist _only_ in the IPv6 space? What happens in PM for such sites when "network.dns.disableIPv6" is set True?

Besides the above settings, how does the use of IPv6 affect PM?

Gotta ask, why are you looking to change defaults?
What are you looking to accomplish?

(Both dated at this point [so any "issues" should be less of an issue, now].)

Why do you want to disable it?

If they expect traffic from IPv4 resolved domains to directly connect to IPv6-only hosts, and they have not set up dual-stack or a 4-to-6 gateway for it, then those connections will fail. The exact same goes for traffic from IPv6 resolved domains directly connecting to IPv4-only hosts, if there is no dual-stack or 6-to-4 gateway when your ISP/connectivity is IPv6-only.
In other words: for servers it will be very important to have dual-stack and DNS resolution in both address spaces, or a proper address-translating gateway.

Effectively it does not affect Pale Moon as an application; Pale Moon fully supports both stacks - it will try to use IPv6 first and fall back to IPv4 if it doesn't work. You can maybe save a few milliseconds by disabling IPv6 if your ISP doesn't support it, but otherwise there's no influence.

set up dual-stack or a 4-to-6 gateway
In which case servers mentioned in scripts are available in IPv4.

So you are not aware of any highly promoted sites, expecting mostly traffic from modern phones & Windows from big ISP's (and don't care about any others) that assume their customers will be IPv6?

Are those about:config settings completely local to PM, or do they access global settings? What does "network.notify.IPv6" do?

They are local to PM.

IPv6 works perfectly fine here and if it doesn't work fo you, fix that instead of disabling it.
