.jpg extension not recognized

Unread post by LuftWafflePilot » 2024-02-06, 09:06

When I am prompted to upload a picture (irrelevant of website), the dropdown menu only lets me choose between .jpeg and .png. I have never seen an image with .jpeg extension in 20+ years though.
Can you change this please? Just a little quality of life improvement.

Looks to work here.
Attachments | Add files, & I'm prompted to add a picture. I select a .jpg (or .JPG as it is), & up she goes.

This sounds a lot like being website-relevant. Examples are needed.

:) A .jpeg file is exactly the same as a .jpg file. Simply change the extension on your file to ".jpeg" (or copy it that way if you wish) and upload it that way. It should definitely work.

It's definitely something about PM.
The same website, PM on the left, Firefox on the right:

You probably do not have a mime type registered in your system for the "jpg" extension, or the "jpg" extension is not registered at all.
At the same time, Firefox can add some file types in addition to the system list.

The same website
...

(Don't worry, we'll get there.)

Simply change the extension on your file to ".jpeg"
That is not the point, or to be expected.

As already mentioned: JPEG=JPG
JPG: derived from old DOS-based computers which could handle maximum 3-character file extensions.

So far all this thread is about nothing.

This post, viewtopic.php?p=248374#p248374, shows it is clearly about something.

Who gives a shit, three digit file extensions are the norm to this day.

No one in this thread claims there's a substantial difference between jpg and jpeg. It is not the point of this thread. Please read it more carefully.

Can you please post the output of help -> troubleshooting information? (use the "Copy text to clipboard" button and paste it in your reply, preferably using the forum's [ hide ] tags)

May I ask you how many digits has the HTML extension?

BTW, the picture you posted has the JPEG TrueColor (v1.1) format. ;)

Right. You are paying zero attention. And no, jpg and jpeg are not identical. 3-letters vs. 4-letters is not identical.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc ... input/file

By default (in their example), they are allowing "image/png" & "image/jpeg".
The latter allows both .jpeg & .jpg (& more).

Code: Select all

<input type="file" id="avatar" name="avatar" accept="image/png, image/jpeg" />
If you were to change it:

Code: Select all

<input type="file" id="avatar" name="avatar" accept="image/png, .jpeg" />
then for a "jpg" file, only .jpeg is offered (& not .jpg).

So...

On the site in question - which we still do not know, how do they code things?
And then, why are there different reactions to that code between PM & FF?

It depends on how your system has MIME types registered. for example, because I have .jpg MIME types registered to Paint Shop Pro, it will tell me "Paint Shop Pro image (*.jpg)" in the dialog box. In your case it seems only the raw MIME type strings are available, and it's therefore not registered properly in your O.S.
I don't know why Firefox displays something different -- perhaps they are defaulting to certain strings if the MIME type does not resolve.

Looked into a bit of this because it also fails for me quite frequently, but not in the same way. video/mpeg doesn't seem to exist even though it's all set right in the registry, image/jpeg only has .jpg even though .jpe and .jpeg both have Content Type values, etc... Found this stackoverflow question that points to nsExternalHelperAppService.cpp, and contains a defaultMimeEntries array that does not seem to be applying correctly or something.
