Palemoon has supported SOCKS 4 and 5 from the beginning. It doesn't, however, support SOCKS 4A, which is a modification to SOCKS 4 to allow the client to request connections to hostnames rather than to IP addresses. This makes SOCKS 4 usable where you can't perform proper DNS.
The checkbox "Use proxy to perform DNS queries" is also labelled "SOCKS v5 only". With SOCKS 4A support this could be made available to both 4 and 5, and programatically it's a simple change.
